oh shit its a 5 spd SE? Dang. I might consider going with the Max... it's the v6 with a 5 speed right?

Edit: oh nevermind, its no faster than a 3.0 CL... stick with the CL bro. Cruise in style..

The problem is i don't have a 3.0 i have 2.2 so a V6 would be a nice step up!

I have a '99 CL 3.0 and just recently replaced my '95 automatic Maxima with an '02 6-speed Maxima.
IMO, if you prefer the looks and handling stick with the CL; if you want better straight line acceleration than what you have now get the Maxima, especially if it's a manual. Both cars are good and at the same time both cars have issues. Personally, I prefer manual transmission in any car and for me that would make it easier to decide.
Maxima = acceleration
CL=looks, handling

CL=handling....are you serious? The maxima could out handle a CL any day!

I would take the 99 V6 5-speed SE Maxima over the 97 2.2CL.

Maxima=multi-link beam rear suspension
CL=independent suspension

independent suspension > beam

That is true but after driving both on the same roads, and at the same time of day in the same conditions, even though I drive my CL everyday and maybe drive the max. once every two months, the maxima can take the same turns and do it ten to fifteen mph faster the the CL can, and it has nothing to do with my driving, sure the max. has more horse power but that wont make it hold a turn any better. It has better springs, struts, shocks, and wider tires. So i mean yes it does have multi-link beam rear suspension, but if you put a stock 97 CL on a skidpad and a 99 Nissan Maxima SE, the maxima would most likely win.

Don't get me wrong, I like my Maxima much more than my CL but CL still handles better. Find a sweeping curve with a pothole or two and try it with both cars and see what the back of each car does when you hit the potholes - Maxima will bounce outwards and CL will stay planted. This is just one example. I have been driving both cars for years, so I have a pretty good experience with both cars.
If it was me I would still take the Maxima.

ya def. true about the pothole. But the CL is such a boat...or at lest it feels like one, i love my CL but i just don't have the money to take it to its full potential. I would love to keep both, and turn the CL into an autocross beast but its out of the question so i guess i should just enjoy the CL for the next year or so while i still have it
