I have Michelin Arctic Alpin's in 195/65 15 on steel rims with no hubcaps. They're actually more refined than the stock MXV4's yet manage to stick better in dry pavement as well. Ice and snow are never a problem (never got this car stuck when I lived in upstate NY). I just threw a set of these on the WRX yesterday too, can't wait to try that out in the snow.

I've also had Dunlop Graspic HS1's on this car before too, but unless you live in Buffalo or someplace that sees lots of snow all the time, I'd stay away... they're too hard core for much dry/wet usage.

my cl has stock rims with 205/55 r16 arctic alpins in winter. always will. these are the only tires of which I'm aware that rival studs. I'm in colorado and experience all conditions through fall/winter/spring, and I've discovered two drawbacks to this tire: 1) they instill overconfidence in any condition, period; and 2) they track so much better than stocks that I'm hoping my choice for this next spring comes close to tracking as well. oh, and another thing: they look really cool. my advice is buy them and don't be afraid to run full size.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta (www.nokiantyres.com) snow tires are the only way to go (esp. NRW model).

These are one of the very few brand tires theu sell in Northern VT and can attest to countless local feedback about the unbelielavable attributes of these tires. A little pricey but well worth it.
