Any suggestions on procedures to get my CL ready for winter?

Flush, Flush, Flush!

Looks like you have just bought the CL so you must asume that all the fluids are as old as the car.

Flush and replace with the best synthentic:

Cooling system-for heating
Breaks-to stop and save your ABS
Clutch/tranny fluid-to shift
Check tires
Check/replace belts and hoses
Change fuel/air filters

Should cost around $150 to have a grarge do it al for you.
I recommend Mobil 1 for oil and gear lube (fpr bearing if needed).
"Orange" synthetic anti-freeze.

Good Luck!

How many miles on a car do you think this would be necessary?

LOL

But won't the cheap 4x4 require me buying a whole bunch of other things for it?

Flushing should be done about every 15-20K miles or depending on if you car overheats a lot.
