I like sealed boxes. Ported boxes have to be huge and with our minimal trunk space, its just too big.

Well it depends on what brand of subs you plan to get. I don't know the specifics but some brands are designed to be in ported some in sealed. JBL's come to mind i think but that's all i can remember

Go with the sealed, you'll have better sound quality and deeper bass in your car. The ported will be cool, only if you plan to drive around with your trunk open and head out your sunroof.

Sealed stinks IMO, they really have very shitty qualities. If you look at their freq response chart, it looks like a mountain. They are also inefficent as hell, and usually require twice the cone area and power to play at a comparable volume to a ported box. They also require gobs of nasty EQ to make up for the before mentioned shitty freq response. The only one advantage I see to a sealed box is that you can pull a larger freq range (IE play lower) than a ported box b/c the ported box is cutoff slightly below the tuning freq. Really, if you need that sort of low bass - you should have a sub and an infrasub.

The problem is noone knows how to really build/tune the proper ported box, so everyone thinks that sealed is better. Or it could be the fact that a shop wanted $800 to make the proper ported box, and the Q-logic boxc was $99. The other problem is that most people don't understand the cutoff after the tuning freq, and wonder why ~25Hz tones sound like shit on their box tuned to 40Hz. Ported boxes have a much flatter freq curve and really sound better (if done right). They can also sound much worse if done poorly.

Hey, how does that setup sound? Thinking about using that sub, of course the box will be reversed tho.

I beg to differ. Many of the new subwoofers are designed to run in a sealed box due to the size factor of the box. I know many guys that wouldn't run anything else but a sealed box. IMO a sealed box will out preform a ported box and be waay smaller. If you talk to many car audiophiles, they will all prefer sealed boxes over ported. Ported is old technology when it comes to car audio. To properly build a box, you need a program that you can enter the subs specs and will show you the optimum enclosure and freq responses and curves. Ive had sealed boxes that had flat responses and accurate enough to hear every sound off the kick drum and every string off the bass.

LEAP, etc - yea I got that

I still have never seen a sealed box that didn't need EQ. Most professional subs that are sealed (like The Bag End) require a special controller (IE heavy EQ in a box).

As far as car audio goes sealed subs can achieve a flat response with just a crossover. Sometimes it sucks to get pro audio subs to sound good. Massive amounts of eq esp in a room with alot of slap-back. Thank god for xta's.

the q-logic bandpass box i have was designed for my Polx GNX 12"s, the speaker driver specs exactly match that of the box, i get great sound quality and tons of bass out of a decent pair of mid wattage speakers... those englosure programs kick ass though, if you build a box exactly to the specs of the speaker they are sooo efficent. only problem with my bandpass is the cutoff but thats ok becuase the 6x9's bump hard enough when the music is real low.

It bumps HARD. A ported box that size + 1000watts running ONLY to a dual voice coil 12" Alpine Type R sub = BOOM BOOM BOOM.

I got the gain only up to 40% and its already plenty.

Sweet, I'll prob be using an Alpine amp, 500w RMS - so that should be perfect.

This is an interesting statement. Why would you want to have some huge spearker box in the trunk?? Luxury cars dont come stock like that. Luxury cars are suppose to have great stock stereo's keep the stock!

I dont know how much you spent on your box but i made mine for 34 bucks IMO all boxes are cheap its the subs that are expensive. The box is only as good as its builder.
