Saying Hello

Hi, all. Having owned 4 CLs now, I've been using and perusing this site for some time getting helpful advice, and finally decided I better join. We became CL owners about 4 years ago when my daughter wanted a good looking, classy coupe. We bought a 97 2.2 for her with about 76,000 miles on it. Six months later she was run off a small country road by a car coming at her in the opposite direction. Car was ripped to shreds going through a barbed wire fence and collapsed like an accordian when it hit a metal and concrete greenhouse. Surprisingly, she was totally unhurt except for a bruise on her knee. Not surprisingly, the insurance company considered the car totalled . She was devastated about losing her car, til we got the appraisal for what they were giving us for the loss. She got about $2000 more than she paid, so we went shopping for another CL.
The next one was a 98 2.3, with 60000 miles, in just about mint condition. That car lasted to over 160,000 miles, and was recently passed on to my son. 2 months later, somebody hit him and once again the car was considered totalled. I wasn't surprised that the damage was more than the car was worth, but I was surprised with how much the insurance co. gave us. They valued it at $6200 plus tax. So we went shopping for a new CL for him. We almost bought a black '99 3.0, but noticed a suspicious tranny slip. Coming on this site I learned that this is a common problem with the automatic, which is a shame because the 3.0 was really nice. We found another '99 black CL but it was a 2.3. Definitely slower accelerating, but once you got going it was fine and he seemed happy with it. We put a K & N filter on it and he noticed a big difference in acceleration and gas milage. As he's planning some mods, I've been trying to help him, reading through the wealth of information on here and passing it on to him (he's not a reader ).
Oh yeah, the 4th CL in our family is an '03 3.2 which my oldest daughter bought new. No problems with this car in 4 years, and she has it trained to go fast .
Sorry if this is too lengthy, I'll keep it briefer in the future!

Me, I have a Lexus . I do have a fondness for the CLs, though. I like the styling of the 1st gens better than the 2nds, though the '03 has way more power. When we went looking for a luxury sports coupe in '03, after trying a bunch of things the eldest daughter admitted that the CL had the best combination of luxury and performance for her. I think the body styling got a little dated for the younger market - there's still a demand for a hot, luxury sport coupe out there, and if they had updated the styling sales probably would have been better. I know the RSX was supposed to cover that, but it's a totally different ride.

Insurance - don't go there

Thanks, I almost hate to admit this but I'm a GIRL (umm, lady...). Am I still welcomed? My dad was a good basic "backyard" mechanic, the kind who everyone brought their cars to when the garages couldn't find the problem. And he'd find it and fix it cheaply, cursing out those "thieves" at the garages that misdiagnosed or actually lied. He hated the repair shops (no offense meant to you mechanics who work in garages). Then systems started becoming too newfangled electronic for him and he was at their mercy. I never gave much credibility to his rantings 'til I got ripped off and lied to a few times myself. Now I'll research a problem and see if I can figure out what it might be before I take the car to be fixed. Though I can't do car repairs myself I do learn a lot through reading, and more than once I knew that the actual repair I needed was NOT a new motor .
I really think highly of people who can do their own mods and repairs. I wish I learned how to do more on my own from my dad. So I'm encouraging my son's interest in working on his cars. He's been learning how to do your basics - brakes, oil changes, etc. with some help from a mechanic friend. He wants to do a CAI or exhaust next.

You're one cool mom. My mom always yelled when I spent money to buy mods but at the end she'll say it's nice.
