RPM Fluctuation 1k-2k in park

Greetings everyone.

I have a co-worker who has a 98 CL auto v6 w/ 45k on the odo and she is experiencing a problem.

In park after the engine is up to operating tempurature, the engine rpm jump from 1k to 2k without any input from the gas pedal. This occurs until the engine is shut off.

I did run through the forum's "extremely usefull topics" and didn't see anything that mirrored this problem.

Perhaps someone will be so kind as to point her in the right direction or may know of the exact problem and its fix.

Thanks in Advance for your time and assistance,
KNLNGUS

That usually happens in the winter when a car is cold so the engine will heat up faster. It could mean the thermostat is bad.

Sorry to be vague but it can be anything.

What condition is the car in? Does your co-worker keep up with oil changes and tune-ups?

Does the idle sound smooth or rough?

Is the idle jumping from 1k to 2k and staying at 2k?

or fluctuating from 1k to 2k to 1k to 2k ....

Check the thermostat. Its the most likely problem. If not the engine could just be having - like wingman said - any number of problems. Something in the cooling system could cause it...something in the ecu...intakes...exhausts....lots of stuff could cause this.

also...make sure the throttle body isn't sticking, that would cause it to rev.

That sounds normal, if the idle rises approximately 300-500rpm's. The idle boosted to compensate the load that you are putting on the engine from the master cylinder (pressing on the brakes).
