Replacing filter box with K&N cone = SRI or CAI ???
1999 2.3 CL
Since there is already this black tube that comes from the intake and has some small diameter hoses that connect to the engine, would taking out the filter box and replacing it with a K&N cone filter for 3" be the same thing as a SRI or a CAI? Or do I have to have a 3" pipe? What do I do with the hoses that connect out of the stock?
The filter box is already placed up front for cooler air.
What purpose does the stock box provide? There is a funnel that comes up from the bottom so I'm guessing air comes up through that.

You would get some gains by placing a K&N filter into the stock box instead of that OEM one yes... But you you get more gains from spending 30$ buying and ebay one, then buying a K&N filter, put the K&N on the end of that ebay pipe. Pipe = smooth on the inside so less turbulence, OEM black plastic is small and rigid with grooves + turbulence.
Remove that restrictor that comes out of the bottom, there is a guide on the forums somewhere.
My 2cents.

Three Wheelin'
They're washable if the mesh is made of stainless. Every cheap cone filter I've seen has used mild steel which rusts. Green Filters is a cheaper alternative to K&N.
