Rattiling noise in engine
Over the last week I've noticed a wierd rattling noise coming from the L side of the engine. It will come and go...really strange. Has anyone heard of this before or had it happened? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same thing in my 99 2.3. It took 2years and LOTS of BS to get the problem resolved. They finally replaced the engine. It had scored the #1 cyl wall and I was the only one who could hear it. I am however an old time mechanic who isn't deaf and doesn't need a computer to tell when an engine is sick. It was apparently done in by the dealership drivers.
The left end of the engine is very busy place, oil pump, water pump, balancer shaft drive etc going on. If the noise changes with the load on the engine, it is in the reciprocating mass and is an internal problem, ie, bearing knock, piston slap/broken ring.
