question about brakes

whats ups guys....long time no post in the CL forum...i hope all is well...i still have my '98 2.3CL that is running strong....my fiancée drives it daily

so the front driver-side wheel starting making a noise recently...only when the car is moving...kinda like something is brushing up against the wheel as it moves...not a whine, not a loud noise....but like a piece of paper is brushing up against the wheel....if you have the radio on you cant even notice it...also, when you apply the brakes, the sound goes completely away...

I took it to a local mechanic...he say i need new front brakes and rotors...

i had the brakes and rotors replaced in July 2008...i call autozone where i got the brakes and they are still under warranty....

for the past year and half my fiancee has only driven this car like 8 miles per day...but all city driving...

I was shocked when the mechanic told me the brakes needed replacement...does this sound correct? i am questioning it because the its making sound clearly goes away when you apply the brakes...if this sound was from the brakes being low, then wouldn't it make the sound when you applied the brakes and not the other way around?

Also, how often do the rotors need to be replaced? i got cheap autozone rotors and put them on in 7/08 as well..

thanks for your advice guys

Could be that one of your calipers is siezed, or you could just have low pads, you can always take it somewhere else and get a second opinion. Also, check the brake shields behind the rotors and make sure one of them isn't bent and grinding on something

Something that could also produce that type of noise is a bad wheel bearing. But that's something much like brakes that's easy to diagnose by a professional. If you have time, just for kicks, lift up the side the noise is from and try to move the wheel to see if it moves side to side or tilt.

I had a similar problem with the front of my car, it was siezed Caliper which ate away at the brake which than kind of wrecked the rotor also!

Just do what comfortcomuuter suggested or take it to another place to get it checked out!
I dont know how it is down where you live, but when i bought a set of cheap rotor, they didnt last long at all!

good luck man!

I would still pull the wheels off and double check the brakes to make sure all is well, thats a pretty vital component of the car.
