Price Check

How much do you guys think it would cost to rebuild the automatic transmission of a 1998 3.0 CL? Its one of those goof ball transmissions thats no good and it lurches into 1st gear. I know its different every where I take it, I was just curious if I could get a ball park figure.

So far I've found "I had the trans rebuilt at a cost of $2551. A new one would have cost $5000."

Why don't you call transmission shops in your area and get a price quote?

I was just curious to see what everyone on the forum had paid.

The first time it went out, I paid $2200.

The 2nd time I was quoted roughly $1400 to $1900 depending on how bad the tranny was. I ended up paying $1700. (went to a different shop)

3rd time I bought a used tranny and kept a spare for the hell of it.

4th time I did the 6 speed swap.

Jeez Cocoa so many rebuilds before you just got a better engine.

So even if I rebuild this beast its going to fall apart again?

I'm sorry for asking a simple question...

This is a popular, and very insightful forum I've even made a post for nothing other than to praise this forum for what I was able to learn from it, and a lot of other 'n00bs' come here for good information. There's no need to be so critical of other users who don't know as much as you especially when they're coming to you for your wisdom.

I'm not being critical, I was simply saying that in the future, use the search function. Your question has probably been answered on here before.

I beat the hell out of the car though, and ran a 125 shot. I wouldn't expect anyone else to have so many issues at short periods of times whom treat their car good.

I did try the search function and I found one thread in which someone asked the same question back in January about rebuilding costs. It had only a few price responses yourself being one of the few who took the time to respond. I posted a new thread to see if new members since then, or anyones new experiences with their expenses on their transmissions has changed since then considering how often some people have had to rebuild them unfortunately.

Haha ok good to know. I'll try to go easy on the beast when I get it back from being repaired.

You know being a noob in all of my glory here I didn't think it would be as high as 500 miles to break her in. You might have just saved me some serious damage. Thanks Cocoa.

The torque convertor is rebuilt and replaced, so that's really what you're breaking in. From my understanding.

Someone told me that I shouldn't take the car over 50 mph for the first 500 miles. Is this true? It sounds a little off to me.

I'm getting the car back this Friday, and Sunday I'm driving from Houston to San Antonio and back which is close too 500 miles there and back. So that will help break in the new tranny, but this is I-10 we're talking about. I-10 is the do not go under 65 mph freeway or you WILL be run over. If this keep it under 50 mph for the first 500 miles is true I'm going to be in a spot of trouble.

Sounds about right to me - but make sure the gasket is sealed really well haha, mine wasn't after my rebuild!
