Pondering about what to do
For some reason I have found that in the south the 3.0 seems to be cheaper than a 2.2/2.3 CL. I have no idea why and the 2-3 mpg difference doesn't matter that much to me but reading the noob guide I saw that the autos seem to crap out and I was wondering about how long I can expect one to last? I would buy a manual 2.2/2.3 but I have 300ZX that is a manual and kinda want a comfortable daily driver with an auto. I'm hoping to avoid the mod bug but who knows a nice dual exhaust for that V6 is already looking good. Let me in on some info on the transmissions and where to buy a cooler and anyother advice you guys have. I got bit by the cl bug when I got to drive my friends mom's 99 2.3 5-spd and I've wanted one for 3 years now. I finally got some financial stability in my life and I decide it's time to do something for me.

3.0 auto's are fine if you take care of them, and get a tranny cooler

whatever you do dont sign up for the Subuzz Auto 3.0 Driving School for Tranny Abusers...
Just throw a tranny cooler in there to help keep the heat down and that will help immensely.

if you dont want tranny problems just get a 2.3 5 speed.. and if you go 3.0 which are the coolest cars ever then get a tranny cooler, hayden transmission oil cooler model 1677
thats the one for 3.0s, i have a brand new one sitting in my trunk i can sell, i didnt feel like installing it, and my tranny is fine for now

I was talking about an actual dual exhaust and I'm not a little ricer I wouldn't put a dual exhaust on a 2.2/2.3. I may just leave it stock though because I've been yelled at numerous times for taking home my girl at like 2 or 3am and she got mad at me because my cars so loud and her dad was mad at me for not having his daughter home sooner so I may want to keep a low profile car. Still undecided there but I'm almost positive that I'm gonna go with a 3.0 and buy a tranny cooler. Manuals are great but for your my daily driver I kinda want a manual. And when I miss a manual the z will be just a parking spot away.

Yes, if you've already got a spirited Manual car, definitely go with an auto.

A transmission cooler is the answer, and I'd also get the fluid flushed and new fluid, not the old fuild run through a filter put in. Outside of a-zine there aren't too many complaints about the trannies...so it could be the way people around here drive...so I guess the bottom line is if you like to drive fast and whatnot then its going to be bad news, but if you drive like your mom/dad would drive it'll probably last as long as any auto would.

It's a 1986 300ZX 2+2. My friend has a 86 turbo. I was originally gonna go with just dropping in a turbo motor and keeping the z but I decided that if I want to enter the professional world in a few years I need to look the part. Plus the CL is one of the best luxury coupes ever.
Just for curiosity I did read that there is a 130mph limiter on the 3.0 What kind of limiter is it and how do you remove it?
Is it a fuel cutoff? Do you run out of gear and rpm's? Why can't it go faster. Because I want to peg the speedometer at least once.
