Well, if you were to cut it at the point where the red lines are, you would have to cut both the inside rod, AND the casing rod that the shift knob screws into. the problems this will cause that you will have to fix are 1.) the inner rod will have to be rethreaded so the angled tip can screw back onto it (BLUE CIRCLE ), and 2.) you will have to redrill, and probably rethread the holes for screwing in the shift knob again (RED CIRCLE)
also, make sure you don't lose that spring at the bottom of the shift rod, that would make it so you would shift into any gear at any time, and that would be BAD.

oh yeah, and one more thing... wheree the hell did you get that diagram? I've seen all kinds of diagrams on this site, adn don't know where I could get such helpful information. Somebody fill me in.
OK well the screw holes on the outer casing are no longer being used, so that I am not worried about threading. I am wondering if I can do without the angled screw thing on the top and simply just cut the rod. I mean I dont have the tools to do a thread job, so im wondering if it would work without that piece
Oh yeah and heres the main parts page with access to all diagrams
