A offset ??

Hey quick question guys. I know our cars have a 42 offset, but what does 40 or 45 do? Does a 40 mean it goes closer to the hub, or outwards toward the fender? Same thing with 45? Does it go in or out? I need to know, i think im gonna order Axis Mod se7en's, and i need the right offset. thanks guys.

40 is more toward the outside of the fender and 45 is more toward the inside of the fender. Rite now i have 44 and no problems.

I have 45's - they sit in nicely, but the rim lips is about .5 inches from the strut tower. my wheels are 17x7
