No AC

So I am looking at picking up a CL for a commuter. 98 2.3L 5spd, 128k.
It was female owned which means it wasn't abused, but wasn't taken care of either.
The only thing I can find wrong mechanically is the AC is out.

I took it back to my house today and hooked up an AC pressure gauge, and it didn't even read. Thinking the gauge may not be fitting right, I just pushed the valve in with a screw driver, and it hissed lightly for a second and then nothing.

So my guess is either the compressor is toast or there was a big enough leak for all the freon to leak out.

I asked her to take the car to her shop and see if they can't tell her what is wrong. Compressors aren't cheap, especially labor. But I am sure I could replace it myself if that is the case.

Any suggestions?

Do you hear the compressor click on? You should hear it kick on if you're by the motor. Sounds like the compressor works if it hissed, could be a leak. Not sure how to diagnose the compressor beyond hearing it though

She took it in and just called me. It is just a valve. From reading on the forum, it looks like a few people have had the same problem. It didn't sound very expensive to fix.
