Nitrous question
Nitrous question
In order to legally have nitrous in your car, I've heard that all you have to do is obtain a permit at your local city hall. Does anyone know if this is true?

I don't know if there is an exact vehicle code that says nitrous is illegal. All cops I have talked to can not tell me straight up that it is illegal.
Unless you want to put placards on your CL that says "N2O."

i don't know why you need a permit
i know of at least 20 cars with nos that don't have a permit
including me
i just called my shop and they said they've never heard of a permit needed and they install nos often. maybe your state is different

In Maryland, you must have a permit (or permit-type thingy) in order to have N2O in your vehicle.
Also, in California, it's illegal to have nitrous on any pollution controlled vehicles (according the the Zex web site).

Seriously if your worried about cops then you shouldn't have a bottle in your car. If your going to have nitrous in a car you'll be street racing, speeding and other illegal things so who cares if you have a bottle of nitrous in your car, compared to getting arrested for street racing. And if you have a bottle a nitrous in your car and your not speeding or street racing than there’s no point for you to have nitrous in the 1st place.
Besides the worst thing I ever heard a cop do to someone that has nitrous is that he had to empty out his bottle in front of the cop.

But, I think its still illegal to actually USE it on the street at all. The permit should be only for the track.
thanks for the info. guys.
I know it's legal in NJ to use nitrous on the streets, however, I heard about a permit that's needed which states you carrying some type of bottled gas in your vehicle (something like that)
It's not so much that I'm worrying about getting tickets from cops, since I stated above that it's legal to use in NJ. It's that I don't want to get into the situation where I get in trouble for carrying it in my car without a permit.

It depends on your state, in CA you cannot have it hooked up and if you are transporting a bottle you must have one of those diamond shape placards that say you are carrying it.

I always thought it was legal in califiornia because it burns much cleaner than gasoline. However, I have no way of backing that up.

Maybe this will shed some light on the topic. http://www.n2o.org/faq/index.p?view=...iew&fq=nitrous
