Newbie with a 99

Hey guys, just thought I would register on a CL forum since my girlfriend got a white 99 CL i4 automatic a few months ago... I like to fix things on her car if anything comes up, so it is good to a have a model specific resource...

Im Damon and Im from Michigan- I myself drive a 99 toyota solara se. Im a mod over on toyotanation.com and have been into tuning toyotas for about four years. I just supercharged it this summer and have been gradually adding things to the car, installing JIC coilovers this weekend! Here is my gf's car and a couple shots of mine:

and my car:

Hope to learn a lot from the site and meet some people! I didnt see an intro section anywhere, so I apologize if this is in the wrong section... stupid noobs

thanks guys! the solara is already dropped on tein/tokico, the pics dont really do it justice... im hoping to drop it another inch and snag some 18s in the spring when i get it back out. I didnt know you had this much traffic here, seems like a really nice community!

thanks for not hating me for driving a toyota, the acura is a really nice car though, I like driving it when i get the chance to.

true, and while the CL ownz the Solara in terms of style, you could have gotten a 5spd V6 unlike the CL

true, my solara is a v6 5 speed, very nice to have... I wish the CL was a stick, but the auto is pretty nice in traffic.

I know solaras can be lame, I have only ever seen old ladies driving them before, but thats why I like them... something a little different.

I wish it wasnt going to stay stock, but Im afraid it is alicia isnt into modding and she wont let me do much to it haha.

tell her to look at the 1g frost/taf white photo thread. all those hot, sexy, white cl's might change her tune about modding.a few simple mods can make the cl look like a whole diff beast......(not that it needs much it's sexy as is)

hot white cl's

The sickest Solora I've seen was at the street races back in SoCal. It was white, supercharged, slammed, and just plain fucking sick with the rims and lip kit it had. It was all TRD'd out. Not sure if TRD ever made lip kits for the Solora though, but he had the stickers. I had a friend with a modded Solora on the bottle, they can get pretty damn sick.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, whom takes on whos engine. Do the Camry guys take your engines to swap in, or do the Solora guys take the Camry engines for swaps? I forget, but I remember some of the Toyota guys praising one of the engines for boost.

Yeah TRD made the lip kit as a factory option, thats the kit Im sporting... I have most of the offered TRD parts including the 7 piece lip kit, rear sway bar, strut brace, supercharger, oil cap, rad cap, shift knob, etc... I just dont have the suspension (coils instead) and the LSD, which I would like to have someday if I decide to up the boost...

The motor I have- the 1MZFE- was actually offered in the 95-96 camry as well as the 97-01 camry, so the solara shares platforms with the camry. The 1mz can handle about 7 psi on stock internals with the trd supercharger before it says bye-bye... I know a lot of gen 3 camrys (92-96) used to swap in the 3sgte turbo motor from the celcia all-trac, maybe thats what you are thinking of? I had a gen 3 camry before the solara, but she got too old to mod and was simply too slow (2.2l i4):

I have sold alicia on clear corners I think, she just wont buy them... Ill get them for her birthday as a joke and she will let me, haha. She is also thinking about letting me shave the outer emblems, thats a nice look... thanks for the feedback!

Cocoa, do you have a car domain? Id love to see more of your car, sounds awesome by what I saw in your profile!

My Work Emotions with custom flares (that was my test tire)

On Stockies spray painted black here before the flares

Stripped interior

And the J35A4 short block with the J32A2 head and 6spd LSD tranny (off at the time because I was changing the clutch)

Sorry to hijack your thread like that on page 1. I don't have a cardomain page or anything. So I just pulled out the old pics as seen on page 1.

As for the camry/solora engine question. I guess that's what I had implanted in my head. I knew there was something up between the two, I just couldnt remember. Thanks for the info!

Hey,
Welcome to acurazine. You should be able to find everything you need to know about CL's in here. As for the clear corners, you can get a brand new set on Ebay for cheap. Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/97-98...spagenameZWDVW

By the way, you have the nicest Solara I've ever seen. What kind of numbers are you putting down with the Solara?

Wax and polish those wheels on the CL if you want to retain the mirror like finish, I have the same wheels and am trying not to get any more curb rash.. :

CL will look better with lowering springs, it gets rid of the awkward wheel well gap and it ends up looking more like a BMW 3 series.

yeah I saw them on ebay, but I figured my gf would be a lot less mad at me for putting them on her car if i got a cheap used set from someone... shes not into spending money, especially on cars  thanks for the link though! The solara should be putting down about 220 whp at 4 psi, Im hoping to get on the dyno next month but I have been really busy with school.

As for polishing the wheels and lowering it... the rims already have some solid curb rash from the previous owner, this is probably the only time the car will be washed for about two months  My girlfirend doesnt really believe in washing her car, I just happened to have it for the day and got a chance to clean it up. Wont be lowering it since she wont let me, but if it was mine you can bet it would be slammed!

Ahh I've seen your Solara on ToyotaNation before I think. Very sick car. My buddy posts around on there, and I gotta say, you guys got some sick stuff going on. I love the Cypher or however it's spelled.

And you GF will enjoy her CL very much, don't worry about that. Hopefully she lets you do some of the little stuff gradually over time though, haha. Think she'll let you put wheels on?
