Neutral Drop??

Well tonight was a boring night so my friend and I decided to just go cruise around the streets...and we pulled up next to a dodge stealth at a light and my friend started to rev his engine to get the stealths attention...and right when the rpm needle was around 5-6 the light turned green so my friend put the car in D4...and his tires chirped and he launched pretty nice...the stealth never raced us...but we were surprised enough by the chirp...is this what a neutral drop is? and if so is it bad for the car?...cuz i've heard it was bad...just wanted to make sure before I went to try it out..

Yea that sounds like a neutral drop and it is very bad for the car but one time probably wont do much

when i want a really nice launch i'll do a brake torque.... is this as bad for the tranny as a neutral drop? i wouldn't think so since the car's already in gear but i'm not sure

Based on how fragile Acura/Honda automatic transmissions (even 1st gen) have proved to be, it does not seem that any abuse is prudent.

Both techniques, above, are terrible for our trannys!

If you keep them up, eventually, you ruin your transmission. The only uncertainty is when :'(

I have done occasional "power braking" at the Drag Strip, but I keep it to a minimum.

ummm yea.. a NUETRAL DROP, BRAKE STAND and every other high RPM at a stand still launch is NOT healthy for your car and TRANNY!

FYI, tell your friend that if he wanted to race, he should be more prepared for that GREEN light!!! that 2 second chirp could cause him to lose the race if there was one, if the stealth had a clean launch!

just thought Id say that!

They way I do to dip a little more is

auto 3.0 cL

I'm at a red, at a complet stop, i drop it down to D1 once the light changes to i floor it, and i let the rpm's go to like half an inch before red line and throw it to D2 and so on and so on till i get to D4. that my way of getting a better start off the line.

also if im around 40-60 mph and i need a little boost i drop it to D3 and floor it.

ps: i know it's bad for the tranny but hey everything is made to be broken right?

You don't have to do it that way....you can just leave it in D3 then right before it redlines...shift to D4...leaving it in D3 is the same as going from 1 to 3 even though it makes you feel like you have a stick

this is clearly why

this is clearly y i buy STOCK!!! LoL

Take no offense guys but thats why stick is the shiznit.

Allthough damage can still be done on a stick (i beat the crap out of mine) but the starts are just that much more lovely.

I hope you don't consider doing neutral drops. they are fun for the split second you chirp but when you are pulling a tranny out from under your car you will be hating life!!!

Just wait till it rains and go get sideways!!!!!LOL

when u do the d1-d2-d3-d4 shift are you supposed to let go of the gas for a second or is it better to keep your foot on the gas floored the whole time?

Hey turbotk,
I'm guessing that the people that aren't sure what nuetral slams are, are the same people that will be getting their trans serviced at a dealer.

Neutral drops are terrible, but brake locks are really not that bad. It will build up heat in your torque converter if held for an extended period of time, but it is impossible to hold a brake lock over a certain RPM. Obviously you don't want to do this for an extended period of time.

Torque converters are rated to engage at a certain RPM. I don't know exactly what that number is on the CL. If you're at a dead stop and stomp on the gas, you're spinning the impeller just like you would during a brake lock - just not as long a duration. The point of a brake lock is to get your motor up more towards its power band before you launch and when you release, it shocks the tires for better traction. At least that's how it works in a RWD with a good suspension setup.
