Damn! Forget hybrids, send your engine back to Acura so they can make copies.

But if you're talking about per tank, then that's not very good. I usually get at least 400 (27.5mpg average) with mostly highway driving.

What kind of car do you have? 2.2, 2.3 or 3.0? If you got the 3.0 then it's about right. It maybe a little low but it depends on how you drive. I normally get about 300 for my 3.0 (mostly highway also)

I've got a 3.0: With summer gas, I normally get ~350. On this winter gas I've been getting ~280. I step on it a good bit too.

PS: Where are you in TN?

Try a search in car talk. This is the First Gen section; there aren't nearly as many 3.2 owners who browse through here.

Re: Re: mpg

Is that with stock rubber? I think I've only gotten 27.5 mpg once, in 90% steady 65 mph driving. It's a manual '98 2.3 CL. I think overinflating my tires slightly will improve my mileage numbers.

No, it's with these

I run about 38 to 40 psi. I don't know how that compares to stock tires; I got rid of my stock tires almost 50,000 miles ago, right after I bought the car.

I have never gotten LESS than 30mpg with my '98 2.3 5sp... weather, tire inflation, speed, state of tune, accessories and gas type all are factors. On the hiway at a steady 75, I'll average 32mpg. Maybe you need to get it tuned?

Re: Re: Re: Re: mpg

Ah, Conts.. I almost bought those myself. After bumping my pressures up I can feel every little pavement imperfection but I'm pretty sure after half a tank of gas, the mpg numbers will go up slightly. I could see touring tires giving you better gas mileage than hi perf. all seasons due to harder rubbers but most performance guys don't buy tires as conservative as even the stock ones which in my case were Michelin MXV (horrible in bad weather)

i use 93 octane on my 2.3 5speed. I just got 400 miles of a tank and that was from driving mostly highway. from Orlando to Gainesville to see the P.O. I was going about 80-90 the whole time. I thought that was a good amount of miles

not like he's getting 150 miles more to the tank just cause he uses 87 octane.

Change your fuel filter, it should be donoe every 30,000 miles

plus, the higher the octane, the slower the burning. It burns slower, thatz why people say you get a lil better gas mileage with 91. But thatz just my 2cents in it.

first thing i did when i got my car was i got a tranny cooler, NGK platinum spark plugs, a new air filter, and i removed all the resonator box and stuff from the intake place. i change my oil every 4500-5000 miles. I dont do anything special. I havent changed my fuel filter or PC valve or EGR valve or anything special. I dont even use fuel system cleaner (water) .....I just ........cruise.......ya know? I mean, once or twice a week i stomp it to get around a stupid girl talk on her cell phone, drivin a mammoth SUV, puttin makeup on, book reading- dumbass.....but thats about it.....

Why not try and use the better gas stations.....first thing i suspect is those ol' mom 'n' pop stations....STAY AWAY!

the intake actually causes your engine to make a different noise, so a resonator box doesn't allow the engine to breathe as much queting it down

i stomp on it way way too much

i think when my dad drives the car he gets 300 miles usually, so it may just be me

From the people that are getting just ~200 miles on a take other stuff is wrong. But losing about 3mpg, that's 42 miles per tank.

You are correct in that the higher the octance, the slower it burns - to a point. Higher octane means that the gas can be compressed more than a lower octane gas before it spontainiously combusts. With pump fuels, this generally means it also burns slower as you go up on octane number. Using this gas is a car that is designed to use a lower octane gas WILL decrease performance. For the most efficent power the timing is set for the peak cylinder compression to occur just after the maximum stroke. For the maximum power, you need the SLOWEST burning fuel that doesn't knock. If you put in a higher octane fuel than needed, your car will more than likely retard the timing to compensate, resulting in the air/fuel burning earlier in the stroke, robbing even more power. The retard in the timing is what will kill your gas mileage.

Now, race gas is a different story. It's formulated to burn even faster at even higher octanes. If you like playing $5+ a gallon it might work for you. Prob not tho.
