missing oil

Hi i am at 82k miles right now, when i took my car for inspection the mechanic said i was missing oil and filled it up, 2 quarts. Now he said he didn't see any leaks and dunno where it went. He said to keep an eye on it. Now is there a way to know for sure if I am burning it or a quick test to see if I am leaking. I cleaned my engine a month ago and didn't see anything leaking. I checked under the car after finishing it up.

If it's leaking, it should be pretty obvious.

When was the last time the oil was changed? The car will naturally "loose" oil over time.

You can also check to see if you're burning oil by checking the color of the exhaust. If it's real bad, the color should be blueish. Even if there's not color, you could still be burning oil.

also even if you dont see smoke coming out of your exhaust you should also pop your hood and look for smoke in there right when you start your car up and after a drive.

good luck

Ok i checked under the car while it was running no drips after like 15 mins of running. The oil was changed about 2000 miles ago. I am on the last leg of running. I have a black exhast so it is hard to tell if i got deposit on it. The smoke from the car is white is any. Winter there is white smoke not heavy looks normal like everybody elses. Is it normal to lose 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles? To me seems a bit much.

it also depends on how hard you drive the car. If your like me and your a maniac with the throttle then it is very feasible to lose that kind of oil in 1-2000 miles. If your a normal driver I'd say you might have a problem. I dont really know what else to say other than if the problem persists go to a trusted mechanic and have him try and figure it out.

Most cars burn thru some oil, that's why it's smart to check it regularly.

i had this same problem over the summer. i'm pretty good about changing every 3 - 5k with mobil one, but i took it to the shop to do my rotors and they checked and i was like 1 1/2 to 2 quarts low. i check it a lot now, but the problem never came back. and there was never a leak or smoke

check your pcv valve maybee its stuck open, or if you have an aftermarket intake it sucks alittle bit more air than the car is used to, and will suck up some oil from the head. especially durring hard accelleration

I checked everything everybody said, no luck. But i think my gas mileage did improve by hitting the ac off button. It seems like my gas tanks are lasting longer which is a big plus.
