Long term Project spanning 6 years-ideas?

Hey guys. Here's the story-

I am going to pharmacy school for the next 6 years. This car is going to be my summer fun car, only going to drive it from may through august and when I come home on random weekends and winter vaca. Through the next 6 years, I really want to build this car up, have alot of fun with it, and make it more performance-oriented.

This summer, I put in a cold-air intake and an obx header. I plan to put in a high flow cat when I get a chance, but not before I leave for school in a couple weeks.

My question to you guys, siince most of you have alot of experience in modifying these cars, is what kind of plan do you think I should have for this car, I want to do something different every summer I come home. And remember that I do have a month home from mid december to mid january in which I can do alot of little mods.

Also, the exterior body could use some work so I plan to get new driver front fender, driver side door (or door skin), new hood (possibly cf) and new rear bumper and then repaint the whole car, which would probably take up one whole summer. So what do you think guys? Any and all ideas are welcome, and remember, I'm not worrying about not getting this money back when I sell the car, I'm going to be a pharmacist, we make mucho dinero, so this car will probably get used as a winter beater when I'm out of college and have bought my supra

id get some coilovers and a brake kit first.

then maybe redo the interior.

get front/rear/skirts and paint the car.

then get the most exclusive wheels.

coilovers are the best performance bang for the buck with the CL IMHO,

i dont have experience with engine swaps.

im not really an agressive driver, but TEIN's turned me into better corner'er

turboing might be an option for me, I want to learn how to rebuild engines so having to redo all the internals would help me to learn better I'm sure. I want to do the majority if not all of this work on my own with a friend, I don;t want to have to take it to a shop, this car is my own personal teacher lol

You make it seem like 11 psi is childs play. 11 psi on an efficient turbo setup could probably see over 300 whp on an h22. But since when do you know what people want to do with their cars. I'm sure people would love to take their cars to the extreme, but the question is will they be prepared for it?

Besides you can't really say 11 psi or whatever psi is shit unless you know what kind of turbo setup people are running. Even yet, peoples setup's vary and you can't say a certain ammount of psi equals a certain ammount of horsepower and use that as a general rule of thumb.

11 psi on a certain turbo is not necessarily the same as 11 psi on another, yet more efficient turbo. Or how a car is tuned. There are many variables to be determined.

It's totally do'able. The best thing to do is to try. Or learn from experienced people. Once you're in the zone, you'll get more into it.

Either an h22 swap or rebuild your f22 with all new internals and turbo that bad boy. Coils are def a must, and maybe an upgraded brake system as others have said, oh and another set of pink neons ftw

i was replying to the moderate boost of an F22 on stock internals..not an H22. Why would u spend all that money for a timid turbo setup. TO me its a waste. .. So 11psi on a stock F22/23 with stock internals, after a 1/2 year im sure your going to want to try and get more power, my argument is, if ur going to put the time and effort into it, go all out.

Well said. I know exactly what you mean from having a WRX for 3 years. Man, I miss that car.

BlackAck-Since I do have 6 years to work on this, I might do both and H22 swap one year, and then a turbo the next summer, how much is a turbo kit going to cost? I've been trying to estimate my income for the summer and I should be making around $5000 every summer, after insurance and gas for four months, I should have around $3000 to do mods.

Playa-I agree with you in that if I'm going to do this, I'm going to do it right and do everything to the T. I want this car to be awesome in the end, and to still run well for a long time. By the time I am done, it will be a 15 year old car so I might get a newer H22, rebuild it, and then turbo it, to make sure it'll last.

I'm going to buy a new car out of college, I'm not worried about that, in the profession I'm going into, money isn't a worry. I love cars, I love working on cars, so this will be a summer project. And if I don;t use that money on my car, I'll probably jsut blow it on a bunch of crap. Out of college, I'll be making upwards of $100k a year with a hefty sign on bonus, I'm not worried about buying a new car out of college..

Alot of shit can and will change in 6 years that you can't predict. Making a 6 year plan at the age of 18 seems crazy IMO. I'm getting my degree away from home for 8 months of the year and my CL sits in a garage unused during that time. I try to save cash during the summer to mod it but it's tougher than you think, especially if you are saving for tutition and shit.
Oh and for the CL, I'd suggest piecing together a turbo kit and boosting it on stock internals.

I'm sure things can and will change, I'm just trying to get some ideas to try and work towards, and I'm not worried about tuition, unlike alot of other fields, pharmacy pays for itself very quickly, I plan to pay back my loans withing 5-7 years out of college. The money I make in the summers won't even cover 1 years tuition bill for where I'm going, let alone room and board and books, since my major is so strenuous and tough, the summer is my time to really have fun. Like I said, this is more of an exploring thread, weighing my options. If anyone ever had big dreams for their car, I'd love to hear them, I want to really build this car up over the years. And by thye way, I'm a person that burns through money, if it isn't going to go towards something, I'll probably just blow it in the first couple months back at school. At least I'll put it into something that I can keep

I have large ambitions of making my car a show car, I just made steps to retire the CL to a garage and not use it as my daily driver anymore. My longterm goals are as follows.

Whole new suspension installed (Omni coils, energy suspension master polyurethane bushings pressed in, ingalls camber kit, st sways, strut braces, tie bar, etc etc)
New front bumper cover, Lips installed and body work done
New Paint job
CF Hood reinstalled with new custom grill
New Wheels and tires (after drop)
UR Pullies
Installing my Thermoblok spacers
Full exhaust installed, (Headers, high flow cat, 2.5" piping, resonator, and muffler)
High Output Alternator built and installed
.net ground kit installed
New battery terminals and amps installed and power wires run
FiberGlass dual 12" enclosure molded by me
New subs, amp, and full A/V setup (coming)
Viper alarm installed
New interior, including seats/leather as well as console and trim work
New NSX caliper upgrades and steel braided brake lines installed
Dr Evil built transmission and installed
Type S machined cam shaft
Apexi VAFC II installed and tuned
Comptech supercharger

Jeez that's a lot of stuff when I dump it all out on paper, but trust me, I'm already well along in the process, but my point is, it's good to have goals and plans. I have lots for my car as you can see, and now that I am getting a new daily driver, these plans will hopefully move along more steadily cuz I can put the car in the shop and/or have it ripped apart and do what I need to do to it more steadily, plus stuff won't break as fast

Don't think that motor swaps take a couple of days for a person that doesn't know where to begin. I myself have did a motor swap on my own with a friend to help me on the side. In terms of motor swaps just make sure you do all the research ahead of time like in terms of what you'll need and what you'll need to replace to get it to operate properly. For my Civic when I did my B18c1 swap I made sure that I didn't cut corners and went cheap with any of the maintenance parts. Everything was ordered from Honda Dealership so that I know that something won't give up so easily when I beat on it. My told me that if he did the swap himself it would only take him about three days straight working on the car and it would be done.

For me it took me two weeks cause of the fact that I would re-wire the engine harness because of the fact that the person who owned the motor before tried to do an OBD-I conversion but failed. Not only that I had the problem you said above about having to order parts. When I lowered the motor into the engine bay with my Motor Hoist I found out that the motor mounts don't line up which I had to put the project on aside and order them from honda. After that I started connecting everything back together slowly making sure that I'm positive that I connect everything right. After that I rented a flat bed trailer and towed my car to my friends shop to let him take a look at all the wiring before I actually start the car. Everything looks good from his opinion and so i start it up and the feeling was amazing

Right now my Civic project is getting out of hand because I consistently dump money into the car like as if it was my own child. In terms of rebuilding the motor I would really advise to have a professional help you out cause if you did something wrong when rebuilding it like sleeving or something the result can be very costly. If you check on Honda-Tech there was a thread where a kid rebuild his money himself and he cracked a Sleeve which in result was pretty nasty.

Another thing that would help a lot is to go shopping at Sears on black Friday for tools On black friday I got so much tools I didn't even use any of them until I did my swap. Air Compressor is a must if you going to do a swap. This makes your swap a lot easier to do instead of doing it manually.

So far in terms of my car the things I've done is:
1996 Honda Civic EX
1998 B18c1 Motor
1998 B18c1 Tranny with Exedy Stage 2 Clutch
2006 Honda Civic SI Rallye Red Paint
99-00 Front End Conversion
99-00 JDM Si Foglights
99-00 SI front lip painted black
GSR Swirlies

Car in the shop now which is getting installed

You're going to be a pharmacist and your one of those civic guys? Jeez... haha, just kidding. As far as tools go, my dad has a 1972 challenger that he i rebuilding, we have ever tool under the sun, including and engine hoist lol. He really wants to invest in a car lift but they can be pricey. One of my best friends works on cars all the time. Him and his friend completely ripped out and built up a 92 gti that beats most porsches so he knows what he's doing but he works mainly with euro cars and not jap cars. We will see in the end.

Black Ack-That list is great! I'm glad to see you have such high hopes for your car. I hope I can do the same.
