a little information for 97 CL owners

I know everyone has seen people change steering wheels in the 97 for the newer steering wheels and every post on here all they ever mention is you will need a new air bag because the 97 isn't like the 98 and above. well I have took it upon myself to do this swap and have purchased the air bag from on1wheel and purchased a OEM wood grain and black CL-S wheel. For the 97 guys there is allot more to it than what has ever been mentioned on this site, first the plastic that bolts to the wheel does not fit the new wheel, second the cruise control switch bracket is made to the 97 wheel and the 98 and above its removable so you have to find those pieces before you can bolt it to the car. This is what I have found so far and hope to be able to find a wheel from someone locally parting out a CL-S but don't know. If not this may be hard pieces to find and may have to pay close to 100 bucks for a oem wheel without air bag on eBay just to get a few parts needed to do the swap

I had a bunch of pics of this process up until my web server went down, if you have any other questions let me know. I ended up buying the plastic pieces from a parts dealer. I also have an extra cruise switch or 2 if you need one, or the volume switch let me know.

you don't happen to remember the part numbers do you. I am having a heck of a time finding them on acuraparts website. Yeah man I will need everything except the air bag thats needed to do this swap. Cars sitting out side with no wheel on it right now because I thought I had everything I needed (just the air bag and the wheel) and that is why I started this thread so to make sure any other person with a 97 doesn't go ahead and tear theirs apart and then have to put the old wheel back on like it looks like I am going to have to do unless I can find some part quickly close by. BlackAck I will pm you about the parts you have, thanks

Here's where I got my trim pieces from, I'll double check but I should have both switches for you.

I just ordered everything needed (which is everything that bolts to the wheel itself) except for the cruise control switches and radio switches so hopefully will have everything to put it together soon. I have ordered parts from them before and they get here the very next day so I may wait to put the wheel back on and see if they come tomorrow and just drive something else until then. I can put everything on and then put the switches in once they get here if you have them

if you get the whole Wheel off of another car or from a 98 up CL you will not have the problems I had, only if you are going from a 97 wheel to a wheel purchased raw (meaning with no hardware, just the wheel). You are supposed to use the hardware from your wheel and since the 97 is different than the 98-99 and above CL the 97 hardware will not work on the newer wheel at all. So you can't just purchase the woodgrain wheel from acura and then slap it on the 97 like you can the 98-99 like I have seen others on here do, unless you have a 98-99 wheel already on your car

Once I am done putting the newer one on my car if you need wheel and air bag from a 97 just pm me. That is of course if you want this bastard wheel (since its the only year they used this certain wheel) on your car. I did paint the back cover of the wheel with SEM landau black to match the black wheel I thought I was going to put it on

just got a email saying all the parts i ordered are backordered so will take 5-6 days before they arrive at their shop and then they will ship them to me so i am gonna just put the original wheel back on until they get here.

BlackAck, did you ever find out if you had those switches? if you don't I can order them from eBay and probably get them around the same time as the other parts since its going to be at least a week before they get here

there are a few sets in different auctions. The lowest i see is like 17 dollars and something for one and 16 dollars something for the other. These are from the same seller. I don't want to do anything until I hear from BlackAck first since he was the first to offer help though

Bessemer City is South of Charlotte near Gastonia. Wilmington is a good little drive. Brian (on1wheel) lives in Mooresville about an hours drive from me (believe me I have made the trip a couple times to his house)

well all my other parts finally got here today and my switches should be here within the next day or so also so as soon as they get here I will be putting this dern thing on. Thanks for everyone's help and hope if anyone with a 97 see's this they will know everything they need before they start tearing theirs apart and then realize nothing from the original wheel on the 97 will work on the new wheel
