Do your lights get real dim at night? If so, it's the alternator.

Does the car ever idle rough, like go up and down in rpms on it's own? If so then it's the ICV (idle control valve which is located underneath the throttle body, it's also both mechanical and electrical)

Last thing could just be, you might need to clean out the egr valve or replace it. Also, have you tried resetting the ECU? All you need to do is disconnect the negative terminal for 15min and then plug it back in.

I had a engine check light too. It said it was my O2 sensor. But after a little closer look, I found out it was my catalytic converter.

Definitely check codes, and checking EGR related stuff couldn't hurt!

He said the CEL is on, but never gave us any codes... But yeah, emissions system needs a closer look. Only other things could be a damaged harness, or a bad ecu... Not too likely for those... check the CAT.
