introducing myself

Just bought a black/black 1998 3.0 CL. I used to have a 2001 3.2 CL but I totaled it. BUTTTT, I've been having fun with the 3.0 because it came with a bunch of mods...

intake/exhaust
2 12" subs/Pioneer system
Pioneer TV/navigation
TV in the headrest
clear head/bumper lights
smoked out tail lights

... might be forgetting some stuff.

it had 87,XXX miles on it and I got it for $5400... I'm pretty sure that's a good deal in my area, but I'd like to know what you guys think.

but heres some bullshit...

I've had the car for not even 2 weeks, and yeah...

some guy makes an illegal left turn and fucks up my entire front side.

but I'm pretty confidant insurance will be on my side and everything will be squared away and fixed soon. I'm trying to look on the bright side and tell myself that at least I'll have a shiny new bumper and fenders

I'll post pictures as soon as I can.

install a tranny cooler to prolong the life of the tranny and it should hold out a lil longer. it still has low miles so he might still have some life left in it

ok, I'm not really a huge "car" guy so bear with me...

All this reading about the tranny problem has got me super paranoid now. Is it normal for the car to get to 4k rpm even at a low mph? it doesnt really pass that unless I rev. What should I be looking for in a tranny problem?

wait what???

so are you saying something like 4000RPM at what sort of speed, low MPH isnt quite descriptive enough, I mean im at 4000 RPM going around 20, around 45, then again around 80, it all depends on what the tranny wants to do really, but when you get on it..... or if you get on it does it pass 4k on its own or does it just kinda stop building revs all together

honestly, I think my tranny is fine... but all this reading is making me paranoid. Like it might get up to 4k RPM even at 20 but it will drop back down. If anything it builds revs TOO easily? if that makes sense. but it doesn't redline at 60 or anything like that. This might all be totally normal and I'm just paranoid, you tell me.

again, I'm not a car guy so this is probably a stupid question... does slipping mean skipping gears? that's something I would feel and notice right? My ride is relatively smooth considering its a 10 year old car... I've kind of noticed that the pick up is on the slow side, could this be tranny related?

some people on the forum say they have had no problems with their original tranny and GOD I'm hoping I'm one of them...

Dude, you're fine. That's all normal. Is yours a manual or auto? If it's a manual then especially don't worry about it. Make sure you're warming up your car before you drive it though during winter.

My CL has 150,xxx miles and the tranny is still fine. As far as I'm concerned its the original tranny.

he has a 3.0 it has to be auto. Unfortunately. I honestly think it has something to do with the driver sometimes. My parents got mine summer before my senior year. I beat the living shit out of it. If I had known the tranny sucked complete ass. I might have babied it a little more. BUT I didnt haha. Anywho. Just take it a little easy on it. Idk thats just my . From what I noticed, if I push the pedal to the metal lol. I shift out of first at around 35. Out of second around 64, and out of 3rd at around 95. Thats all I know. lol. My tranny is going again. But I think its worth it, I love the car. My dad, not so much. haha All I can say is good luck!

i get amused by all the 3.0 fanboys saying how their tranny is "fine"- when it takes a shit on you in the middle of the highway and u lose 3 of the 4 gears like davzilla, facing a 2500 rebuild quote, i bet that would be real "fine"

I get amused by every 2.x fanboy owner that instantly tries to scare any potential 3.0 buyer away from buying a 3.0 cuz of the dreaded tranny failure. And make themselves feel better about their slower 2.x's by dumpin on the 3.0's tranny.

Is it not the same tranny as the 2.2? Just more powerful engine? That's what I thought.

but see even with our shit tranny we are still faster. Unless of course you have some major ass mods in your 2.x. I would still buy a 3.0 to this day, even though I know that I know the trannys are known failures. They are still sweet as hell.

My tranny is shit. But I tihnk its "fine" I can floor it. Do anything . I drive it like i shouldnt, especially with a broke ass tranny. I hit 120, on my broke ass tranny. With now slips anything. Its technically not fine. But I think it "fine" enough.

Like I mentioned, I had the 2nd G 3.2 and that had a transmission recall. If our 3.0s have such a bad rep why didn't we get a recall? or did we?

you can't realistically expect Acura to recall the tranny on 11 year old cars, comon now, you bought an older car that happens to have tranny issues, live with it. I remember back in 2003 when my dad had is 01 TL they replaced his tranny because of the recall but it was because it was a problem in the current (at that time) generation of TL/CL.

Do some research man, 2.x CL is sporting the F-series 4 banger and the 3.0CL has the J series V6, two very different engines belonging to two very different engine families.... therefore two different engines can't have the same tranny... To the best of my knowledge, the 2.x auto trannies were not as much prone to fail like the 3.0 trannies...

but if the tranny could possibly fall apart on the highway and stop the car in its tracks the occupants of the car could seriously get hurt. Class action suit anyone?

Or maybe the tranny on 3.0s isn't as bad as we make it out to be? Some people seem to be doing alright. To my understanding the 2nd G's were guaranteed to fail, mine did.

You guys should do more research before you start suggesting that the tranny could fall apart on the highway and stop the car in its tracks....

I'm sorry, was that retarded of me? I don't know, I thought I read on this board that this happened to someone. This is part of the reason I'm getting so paranoid. Should I not be so worried?

Unless you hit a huge ass rock or something that will seperate your tranny from the motor and bust the casing causing tranny parts to fly out of your car (if that happens then you have bigger things to worry about) it will NOT happen. Yes your tranny will fail and it will slip like crazy but you will not lose parts... You will need a rebuild or a replacement tranny... I am not saying that it can't be dangerous because if you are cutting off a car and your tranny fails and you can't get your car to move it could be a problem but other you should clearly see the early signs of tranny failiure, like slipping or jerking before it totally fails so that you can plan for a rebuild or a replacement....

i knew you'de be the first to jump on that. but honestly why would you consider a 3.0 at this point, 10 years after production, with a PROVEN tranny failure that costs alot to rebuild, no swap option from accord etc. its just not wise buying. you've rebuilt ur tranny, you've been there. we've all seen countless "bye cl , my tranny took a shit.." threads. so why people continue to defend the 3.0 is beyond me. it has no upgraded features over the 2.x except extra seat control and it has no aftermarket support. its clearly the flawed trim level of CL.

and to the OP. start saving 2500 for a rebuild. bottom line.

so what will be the first sign of the tranny failing? is it basically if i give it gas and it doesn't result in speed?

Same problem, no recall. I've seen original trannies on here go up to 200K miles. It's all in how it's maintained and how it's driven. A tranny cooler helps prolong the life. Main sign of a tranny going is rough shifts when the engine is cold

What part of the tranny is the problem? I'm looking into getting an extended warranty so I'm going to try and find one that covers that part. I think this is a good idea for anybody dreading the tranny concerns. You guys are quoting a rebuild at $2500 but a 3 year warranty is a lot less than that.

I know the install is pretty simple but how much would a place charge you to put in a cooler? also a fluid change?

do it yourself, we have a diy guide on here, that's what I used to do my tranny cooler. As for the tranny itself, it's usually the clutch disks, the bearings or the torque converter

I dunno about the other guys, but my 2.2 Auto is pretty much a POS...... it kicks hard some days and smoothl the others, it slips the clutches a little some days, and is bang on all the other days....... I mean part of it wants to go out...... but the other part of it just keeps fighting on, I dunno what to make of it any more

Well I got a 3.0 A/T and at 102K miles and shift pretty good. No major problems but it does shift a little hard at times but nothing to bad.
