I did that and only paid 50 bucks. You are technicaly NOT covered because you are not on the policy. If anything were to ever happen (knock on wood (we need a knock on wood smilie)) then you can say you just took the car out that one time. Make sure they have insurance PIP (personal injury protection) coverage. If you get pulled over, it's no big deal. I have before and the cops just see the same last name, so it's fine. You will however raise their rates if you get into wrecks. Speeding tickets go on your record and don't affect your parents rates. If they can ever prove that you drive the car all the time, then they may not cover any accidents or medical bills. I doubt they will ever be able to prove it though. Take that for what it's worth, but don't blame me if anything happens.

I dont think if the insurance company cares if u "just took it out that one time". And when the cop looks at the insurance, can he see who is on the policy??? and also what would happen if i got into an accident and fucked up someone elses car??

To answer your question about legality, It's not illegal.

If the cop sees the insurance, he'll see the name, but if he doesn't already assume you are related, just tell him your mom asked you to go to the store. If you got into an accident and messed up someone elses car, they will be covered. You will also be covered if you say you just drove it that one time.

^^^ however, if the insurance finds out that you're a primary driver, not on the policy they can drop you, or refuse to pay for accidents. However, if you're related, you should be covered. You may be better off for long term, at least being put on as a secondary driver, it's cheaper that way as well.

Me and my dad drove to the insurance place to get it insured. It's a droped del sol with 16" wheels and 45 series tires. It's also a five speed. She checked it out and I drove it home since my dad can't drive a stick. I've been pulled over 3 times and not one cop said anything.

Only my dad was insured, I got pulled over 3 times without my dad in the car, cops didn't say anything, I got 3 tickets, went to court, 2 were dropped, one reduced, my dads record still clean, mine dinged with one ticket.

You should be on a policy anyway, what happens when you're out on your own and have to get insurance. I guarantee anything saved now will be paid in higher premiums because you don't have an insurance record for them to go by. If you finally get a policy of your own at 21 or 22 or whatever and haven't had insurance before, LOOK the F*&^ OUT! They will really ding you! Every state has different laws on coverage, but insurance companies are prety much all the same as far as previous insurance goes!
