how much trans fluid and type

Well I sold my 97 Acura 3.0 CL and Im ready to get used to my new 03 CL. I agreed to get the car State Inspected and I have to change the axle and one ball joint. Im a bit nervous to change the trans fluid in the auto trans cause I have had a bad experience with changing the trans fluid on another high mileage auto trans car before, but I gotta do it if I replace the axle. 2 Questions.

1) Is it necessary to use the specific Honda Trans Fluid and if so has anyone just added the additive to regular Mercon Dextron?

2) Has anyone done this before and do they recall how many quarts it took? Im asking b/c most of it should still be in the trans and the torque converter.

On to the next post. Thanks guys.

I'm not sure to tell you the truth, and it seems like no one else knows... ask your honda dealer... or even sometimes kragen or autozone people would know the answer. Sorry if this doesn't help... but good luck!

not sure what the procedure for 2nd gens is but most the common way to do it for 1st gens is a 3x3 change, which consists of draining 3 qts. Then refilling with 3 qts. Then repeat until this has been done a total of 3 times and supposedly most of the old fluid will be gone. And if i was you i would def use Honda Atf because i've heard these trannies are pretty sensitive.
