How hard is it to cut and rethread the shifter?

I have seen a bunch of short throw topics lately but i really want to make my shifter shorter and add an adapter. I saw mace posted something about a real short shifter which i might do but i want to cut mine down first. I looked at it the other day and saw the rod gets thicker as it goes down. How far down can i cut it and how do i go about rethreading it. Also does the shift knob from the TL fit our cars because i just got one for 10 bucks thru ebay so i hope it works Oh i did search but i didnt find anyone that did this shifter thing. Any help would be great.

I've never shortened my shifter, but I always thought it would be easier to cut a section out of the middle of the shifter and then weld the top and bottom back together again. I'm not sure if the weld would hold up to the day-to-day abuse tho.

Almost forgot....

I'm in the process of buying a short shift adapter and was told the B&M has discontinued their adapter for the 94-97 Accord. I'm looking at a OBX adapter now. I might cut down my shifter when I install the adapter.

Well you can cut ur stock shifer and stick on a Momo shifter on there. Momo's use 4 screws and screw threads to hold oh their shifters.

If you want to get threads after cutting the shifter, you're going to have to take the piece to a machine shop. They have machines that will rethred the stick.

Good luck.

I cut the shifter in my civic, and just like CLTypeR said, use a shifter with the 3 or 4 screws on the side, just make sure you screw the screws down tight,

the shifter arm is actually hollow... cutting it down and re-threading it is not an option, as you will not be left with any steel to thread..

I cut my shifter at the base of the arm, where the stock weld is... grinded off the weld... cut the arm 2" and re-welded it... PLUS i have a B&M shift kit... it shifts GREAT... SOO short!!

If you get the whole shifter out... bring it to a mechanic or someone else you know with a welder... tell them exactly what you want... shouldnt charge much more than $20.

Shit, if you lived closer, i'd do it for free... but oh well.

after getting the console apart... there are 2 parallel bolts at the bottom of the shifter... just take them out... and remove the shift cable from the arm... and as far as I remember, that should be it.

If you cant get it done, let me know... I can get a hold of a shifter (stock) for $25... and I can cut it and ship it to you.
