heat shield question

hey guys, you have been very helpful in the pat and i have a quick question for you. Before i started with my summer plans for the mods on my car, my car started to make a rattling noise. I had my boy check it out (he is a mechanic), and he said it was the heat shield. He told me that he could just cut it off and it would be fine, so trusting him i said do what you gotta do. My question is, is my car going to be alright w/o one and, if they're not nessicary then why are they on there in the first place and what is their function. Thanks in advance.

I believe the heat shield is there to protect passengers if bad things happen in the engine bay (explosions etc.) (or is that the firewall? or are they the same thing???)

i think it says in the manual that the heat sheild helps keep heat from from starting fires, like if you were to park over dry grass and the converter was really hot.

I would just get rid of it.. you could even remove it yourself with tin snips. It's supposed to be there to avoid starting grass fires or something which is a situation I am never in. No wild grass wants to grow here, at least grass that's by the highways in Alberta
