Got My Vafc!
Got My Vafc!
Ok today i recieved my VAFC from AEI for $354.25, his price (apex-i prices went up $40 on electronics). I took it to my buddies house (he distributes products to nopi, summit, and import shops accross the country and attends every major event. His 91 Chevy Hybrid S10 is in the Autometer production catalog 2001) and we figured the installation out, its very easy. our ecu is the exact same as the 98 accord (Us 3.0's) that is in on a additional piece of paper called "US vehicles". my guess is that Niejbd didnt have this paper when he got his. but I compared it to his explanation and it is the exact same. When you compare his exlpanation to the diagram is all goes together now and looks so simple. A wire from the car connects to a VAFC wire, goes through the VAFC back through another wire and then feeds into the VAFC (most do). I am still wondering wheter or not the 3.0 connects the VMT wire or not. Besides that I am hopping on the Dyno next thursday or friday. If someone has base maps I would really apprechiate it before next week so i can get on and off the dyno under $100. If not I may get a hook up on the dyno, which is sweet. So thats to everyone for their help and I will take pics of the install and dyno!!But how do I mount it on my dash and hide the wires?
If there is anything else I should know I would apprechiate it!

yes you need to connect the VTM wire or your check engine light will come on... look at www.apexi-usa.com under V-AFC UPDATES and it will tell you were to hook to the VTM too..
Yes fastvtecCl i have that diagram already, it came with the vafc. Like I know where to plug it I just didnt know if our 97 3.0 had the VTM, because I know neidejb doesnt have one and most accords dont either. Do you know what color the wire is (the ecu)? I have been trying to get ahold of you for your basemap settings w/o the nitrous so when I get on the dyno I know about what range to be in. Could you PLEASE tell me your settings?
Anyone with a VAFC can answer this too (neidejb, blackout, fastvetec, anyone!):
When You turn your key to the on in the ignition (it says NOT to start the car yet) it tells you to do a few things:
1.) Sensor Type: Sensor Number. Is the standard 6 in and 6 Out or do these vary? how do i know this (keep in mind I am Not tuning it for a week, so what it the initial setting for this?)
2.)Number of Cylinders, in my case 6 correct (hence its a V6 3.0)
3.) Sensor Voltage check, does it do this automatically?
4.)Throttle sensor type setting. What is this and how do i know it?
5.) Throttle position self learning. is this automatic? What does it mean closed throttle 10 seconds and then open throttle 10 seconds.Push in the gas pedal?

Just wanted everyone to know that I will be taking pictures of the install process, and write down a complete step by step procedure on the install for the 3.0. Not only will I show you set up, but dyno procedures and my basemap. But until I get someone to tell me the ?'s I needed asnwered earlier I wont be able to do this! So if someone could tell me the answeres to ?'s one through It would really help! Along with that I am currently looking for a old dash (the part that has the radio and lighter) and am going to make a custom holder for the cd player and VAFC out of fiberglass.

2 yes 6 cylinders
3 voltage check just checks to see if your sensor relays are working and if you hooked up the wires properly. if it all works then in 2 weeks you check the voltage check and one doesn't work you know what sensor to change.
4 i dont remember, the book isn't here and neither is the car
5 i just let it go for 10 seconds and then i floored it for 10 seconds when i was at the voltage check screen, and it worked
just install it and play with the throttle settings like i said before and you will know by the feel of the car what settings should be for your base. start with + and see if it cuts off and then -
Hey thanks for everything... I am installing it tonight and this will definitely help! As the throttle sensor type, hopefully the self learning will solve the problem. And another thing I saw that confused me was monitoring the intake pressure (it has you select the range). What is this? Also monitoring the air correction rate ranges(%) do you get to select this, or is it pre set in the way you set it? I know I have been asking a lot of questions but this little computer has a lot of stuff and I dont want to fry my engine!
No man I am talking about the monitoring screen (You have to do this in the initial set up, it is under the ETC menu) it asks the pressure the engine has (like what scale to measure in) It is not actually tuning the engine. And as for the Throttle sensor type setting, this is a little arrow, it either points to the top right, or bottom left, depending on how the engine works at open and closed throttle (it is next to the cylinder number). Will I be able to figure this out by the self learning process.
By the way blackout, thanks a lot! You have been a GOD helping me through this!

like i said, i didn't change the manifold pressure from what it gave me when i hooked it up.
just put it on 6 cyl and have the arrow up
i did a lot of research on various forums for vafc settings and that's all i found, except they were all for 4's not 6's
call apexi, the guys there are pretty cool, i spoke with them a few times myself.
good luck

There is a sensor check that should have a mv reading, but nothing to select.
You can select in the monitoring menu as well but nothing to select.
What exactly are you talking about?

Gotcha now....you need:
-760-0
0-7000rpm
+/-3%
These just set the scales on the graphs in the analog meter and graph mode...dont effect a/f corrections.

i recommend the vafc to any auto 3.0 cause i sure as hell got a response from the 3.0 immediately. lately i have been fucking around with the vtec engagement, i have mine set at 4300 for the top on and 4200 for the bottom. you can start in d3 pedal to the ground and sift with vtec still engaged and sometimes if you time it right you can get it to vtec engage in 3 also i have done it a couple of time in the past week. NOTE: YOU WILL WASTE A WHOLE LOT OF GAS THE FIRST 2 WEEKS OF USE TUNING IT IN AND GETTING THE RIGHT SETTING FOR YOUR CAR. Luckax check your pm i or you can call me and i could send you pics of mine as well as walk you through the setting up of the afc. let me know if you need more help.
THANK YOU niedejb you are honestly a god or something! this is what I have been waiting for! Now for install and DYNO thursday and Friday... and maybe in time for the McCormic show on the 26th in chicago?! I hope so!
