factory alarm. does it work?

Because my alarm works when i hit the panic button, i always assumed that when the door was opened once the alarm was set it would go off. I was surprised the other day when I opened my door from the inside while the car was alarmed and it didn't go off. After messing around with the doors, opening and closing with the alarm on I still can't get it to go off. It makes all the normal chirps when arming and disarming and the panic button works as well. Anyhow, my question is, is this normal? Are our alarms that shitty? If so, i need to upgrade! Thanks

I think it takes around 30 seconds to fully arm. When you unlock the door from the inside the alarm should go off.

No problem. The alarm has some weird high pitched ear piercing sound. Really annoying kinda like the horn

What about when you're outside the car? Can you arm it, wait 30 seconds, and then put your key in the drivers door, unlock, open, and it will go off? Or is there a receiver near the door lock for the computer chip in the key which tells the alarm not to go off? I guess if that's the case I could get a copy made of the key which doesn't have the chip and try that...

You can arm it and than disarm it by unlocking the door with the key. I guess there must be something in the key or it is just a crappy alarm But if you couldnt disarm it with just the key it might be a pain if you battery dies in the fob

Yeah it is the chip in the key that tells the alarm to shut off.....but don't think that it is a real alarm. Unless yours is different from the 98 3.0 that I have, the 'alarm' is basically a automatic unlock/lock with a trunk button. If you hit your car hard anywhere, it won't go off.....it will only go off if you unlock the door from reaching inside the car and then opening the door.

Someone backed out of a space next to me and scrapped against my car once. I was only about 100ft away so I would have heard the 'different' pitched noise that the CL alarm gives off, but alas, there is no shock sensor so..
