F23 sounding like a diesel engine
I always noticed my car (2.3 5 speed) sounded a little "rough" at idle. This is the first winter I have owned the CL and the sound is more pronounced in the cold.
The sound is worst at or passing about 1500 rpm. It sounds like a diesel engine but not as loud. It shouldnt be dieseling though because the power feels right and I use recommended octane. It does not go away when the engine is warm. You cant hear it real well from in the car, but in front it is noticable.
I also have some valve slap, but I'm told its not very bad. I will probably have to get my mechanic to listen to it, but I dont need to go in for a while and I wonder if this is serious/expensive or if the F23 just sounds like that. Its definately coming from the engine bay. Im pretty sure its the engine, but could also be the pulleys/belts (stock).
One of my friends suggested I may need new rod bearings, but i only have 44k on the engine and all maintainance have been performed on schedule, so I would hope not. Im told the bearings are fairly cheap but the labor is a biznitch.

dieseling is when the ignition (key) is turned off and it keeps trying to run. sounds like youve got valves really out of tolerances. check that first as that would be the cheapest rout. also check your oil level.

this is an old thread but i thought i would add that my valves were in need of adjustment horribly, like wilp said, i also needed new plugs and a distributer cap and rotor. finally, he said the noise was also more audible since i have headers and therefore no heat shield, which also blocks a bit of noise.
