what makes an exhaust sound ricey (high pitched), and what makes a exhaust sound deep? is it the muffler, the piping, the header, or the tips or what?

All of the above makes the sound. The piping and resonators are important for sound. If u remove all resonators and ur cat ur exhaust will sound more high and raspy. The muffler is the "last" sound tuning device meaning after the gasses flow thru the piping it goes to the exhaust. If ur piping and resonators are well designed the muffler will smooth it out even more. However if u have no resonators or cat than the muffler will have to tune the exhaust note itself and sometimes thats not good enough. For example if u just weld on a mufler im almost sure it will sound smoth due to the small piping and ur factory resonator and cat. Now if u have bigger piping done without resonators it will sound louder and raspy. I have had all my exhaust work done to my previous car (integra) including 2 muuflers and a custom cat back. The one that sounded the best was the weld-on. The one that sounded the worst was the custom catback with no resonator using the same muffler. That is the reson people buy cat back systems from reputable companies like greddy, tanabe etc. The custom pipe from the muffler shop will not be the same unless u have quality resonators.

Was that a long post or what?
