Question Engine running (ICE) cold?!?!

I did some searches and couldn't find any posts with the same problem...here's the deal..I was driving home on the highway (3 hours at 125km/hr) and sometime in the middle-end of my trip, I realized that the engine temperature gauge was reading as cold as possible (like below the lowest Cold tick)...it looked as cold as when the car first starts up. Normally, my temp gauge reads about 1/4 or so.

I also noticed that the heat is very weak. It blows "warm" at best and this morning it was damn cold (at -12C) in my car!

Just wondering if the heater is broken? or the temperature gauge? or both?

is the thermostat and "easy" fix? I am mechanically inclined but by no means an expert mechanic...if it was less than $100 I'd rather get it done at my dad's dealership (cheap labour).

Is the warm-air valve automatic on our cars? I just read a post somewhere saying to:
"Set it to “Winter” when the ambient temperature is below 15°C (59°F)."

Is this something I should have been doing and also would this warm air valve mess around with the temperature gauge?

yes the thermostat is an easy fix especially for an F22. the trickiest part is bleeding the coolant system. a special funnel that caps off the radiator makes it 10x's easier.

i have no idea. its manual, as in a cable attached to temperature lever in my prelude. but i had the same problem, it was seized and the air coming in was lukewarm. i cant imagine how its controlled by the heater eletronically

I purchased a new thermostat for about $11cdn and got it installed at half-price labour at my father's work. I saw the old thermostat and a seal or something inside was cracked/broken so this was definitely the problem. The engine temp now reads about 1/4 on the gauge.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
