Engine Noise

When I accelerate, especially between 2000 and 3000 RPMs and more so in the lower gears (1-3) I get a noticable chugging noise from my car's engine. It's almost like a fast popping noise that occurs mostly in those ranges. Would this have anything to do with the valve timing? I've heard that Hondas need to have their valves replaced when the engine starts making weird noises. Is there anything I can do to better diagnose the problem before I decide to take the car into a dealer?

I'm just trying to get an idea of what this car SHOULD sound like during those acceleration ranges and whether my car has a problem and how serious that might be. I have a 97 2.2 manual by the way and it has 83000 miles.

thanks for you help

I've read from some people that they have gotten their valves adjusted for like $80 or so, anyone know if that is about right? I've been quoted for around $120 or so at a few places.

If you can find a service manual, you might be able to adjust them yourself. It's not that hard, just a little time consuming.

to adjust your valves, open your hood and look at the sticker on the inside for the lift ratio....the go and get a feeler gauge and test them to see if they are correct or not...i had the same noise in my car and then replace ecu and every thing was better
