Emissions Failure

I took my wife's '93 Accord (2.2 Auto) in for emissions inspection and it failed!

It passed on the Hydrocarbons test, the Carbon Monoxide test, and Carbon Dioxide test (well, there's no real test--they just give you the number).

It failed on the Nitrogen Test. Any idea what could be causing the high readings?

The State Standard is 2.3000 GPM. Her car registered 3.4560 GPM.

BTW: I had a new exhaust system put on before the test (axle-back and new flex pipe [between the exhaust manifold and cat] ) due to rust.

Thanks!

I dont know if that works in MD. My buddy used to live in Bethesda and they failed his Integra hard on his window tint no matter what he said. Maybe its who you know.

Did you check the catalytic converter? My brothers older accord had a similair problem, and that fixed it pretty quickly. Also does it have any aftermarket parts like your car? I know it is your wife's car, but you never know.

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think it has much to do with the cat or exhaust piping.

You may want to check the EGR valve. Also make sure that there is a sufficient amount of vacuum in all the hoses and such.

Basically it means that there's too much nitrogen going into your exhaust system. If that makes any sense.

I'm sure glad I live in a state that doesn't require inspections...what a pain in the ass.
That's an annual thing isn't it?

It's every 2 years!

There's no mods on this car.

My first thought was the EGR valve.

But, could be as simple as a tune up? New plugs, wires, distrubutor cap, rotor, and a can of dry gas????

Yeah rick, thats the first thing I would do. Get a tune up for $75 or so then look into the more complicated and expensive things

I would recommend moving to a state that does not require that... my 93 accord is a POS, and I can guarentee it would fail every conceivable emmisions test... I think those cars are OBDI right?

Yeah, either you're not getting enough spark (distributor, plugs, plug wires, etc) or your cat is dying.

I passed the NJ sniff test even after I removed 2 of the cats on my WRX. Just gotta make sure that the car is completely warmed up and running properly.
