driver's side windshield wiper

i've got a '97 2.2cl, and i have a question about the driver's side windshield wiper...what is that extra piece of plastic that is on the wiper arm? the driver's side wiper has this piece, but the passenger's side does not. it's puzzled me ever since i've got the car...so...what is it for?

It's a spoiler used for applying downward force on the wiper arm at higher speeds to provide better wiping of the windshield. Just like spoilers on the rear of real race cars to apply more downward force on the vehicle to maintain traction.

It also sends a jet of air across the drivers side of the windshield to keep it cleaner in dry conditions.

Yea...I dunno about the spoiler idea. I can't see how it could provide enough downforce. It might even provide some lift at diff angles.

It is a spoiler, but it just needs to create enough downforce to keep the wiper from coming away from the window. At the speeds you would drive to make the wiper flip up, this thing will deffinetly create enough downforce to keep it there.

I could see this maybe helping when the wiper is in the rest position - but when active and vertical, this lil gizmo can't be doing shit - the air passing under it probably creates some lift.

no its true the spoiler really does help keep the blade on the windshield, my friend bought 2 of them for his dogge spirit because on the highway his blades dont touch the windshield at all but with those spoilers the blades work perfectly

It's a trip! :P

I replaced the driver's side wiper arm on my wife's '93 Accord with a pre-90's Accord wiper arm (no "spoiler"). That damn "spoiler" thing DOES work. When driving over 70 mph, the replacement would NOT stay pressed against the windshield enough to clear away the rain!

Needless to say, the next day, I bought the correct one from a junk yard, and it's worked perfectly!
