do i use dishwashing soap to remove wax on the car?

i got a touch up paint pen and the instruction says that you need to remove the wax so the paint can stay on. so to remove the wax, do i give my car a wash w/ dish soap?

thanks

Yes, use dishwashing liquid to remove old wax. It's good if you put on new wax after you remove the old wax.

After removing the old wax (Dawn is the best for this), use a clay bar to get rid of road grime and then put on a different kind of car coat ... from:

www.zainobros.com

I used this (based on recommendations on another car forum) and it is amazing stuff! It has now been six months and all I have to do to get the car as good again is a simple wash and rinse!

Acutally you can just do the spot where you want to touch up. You don't have to do the whole car. You can also use paint prepper that some shops carry. They said this is a little safer because it doesn't remove wax from spots where you might have trouble to wax. Other than that dawn wash is safe if you just becareful and remember to put a "wax" of some kind back on to protect the finish.

Using dish liquid on a cars paint finish is just about the dumbest thing ever. I dont care if Zaino says its ok, its not. Its way too aggressive for the finish. If u need to remove wax, just clay the spot, then re-wax. Think about it like this- would you use car wash soap to do your dishes?

actually, you are wrong, it's totally safe. I've been doing this for years and have friends who detail who have too. I know you run a car wash and have your say in things (and as usual, people will have different opinions). But I've yet to see anyharm come out of it. Use dawn and dawn only IMO. And make sure you throw on wax immediately after. This is a trick that I have seen used on show cars and otehr cars for a long time and I have done it to every car I own.

I've even had conversation w/ guys from meguiars who say it's fine to do. But as I said, everyone will have their different opinions.

But the clay bar won't work, it will only remove most of the wax and sometimes leave behind the additives in wax such as silicones and petroleum. Dawn soap is very harsh and should not be used often because it drys out the paint. A safer method would be to use a paint prep like the one griots sells,

yea, I should of stated that don't go doing the dawn thing often. And the Griots Paint Prep is good stuff from what i've heard. There are also a few other companies that make a similiar product.

Hmm...kinda contradicting dont you think? If its totally safe, why cant i do it all the time?

Like i said before, dawn is way too harsh for todays clear coat finishes. It removes all the moisture, which in turn, can lead to premature oxidation, which causes a car to become "cloudy". You've all seen em on the road. There are a lot easier methods of removing wax. Dawn, or other stuff i've heard of, i.e. Simple Green, gas, etc etc are not some of them. Use a Protective Coating Remover, which is totally clearcoat safe. You might be able to get it in stores, its made by Granitize, code R-4. I know that might be stretching it, but its safer than the other stuff. I've been in the car care business since i was 16, attended countless seminar's, chemical sessions, and been in so many educational classes its crazy. Plus of course, hands on.

In the end, everyone will use what they want, but take it from me....dish soap is not made for a car.

i would think simple green would be safe to use, you can drink that shit

however i've never heard it being used to strip wax.

I agree that using Dawn regularly would not be recommended. However, for an initial wash prior to a clay bar session (my arms shoulders were sore later!) it worked very well for me.

After the Zaino coat was applied, I now use a very gentle, PH-balanced car wash solution (also from Zaino) and it keeps the car looking and feeling great!
