Cv Joint Questions???

Hi Guys,

Just noticed this morning that there is a slight clicking noise when I make sharp right turns ONLY, not when I make left truns. I know I can still drive around till it gets worst, but kind of want to start collecting information as I will be doing this myself.

Now I know this is the CV joint (Drive Shaft) that is making the noise and it is on its way to shitsville, but I have a couple of question's and please answer them in the sequence posted.

1. Since the noise is coming while making right turns i assume it is the right side (driver side) cv joint...am I correct?????

2. Does this mean I should replace both sides when I fix this?? or wait till the other starts clicking as well and then replace both??

3. Should I buy aftermarket NEW?? or aftermarket Refurbished or OEM NEW??

4. Any good sites for the OEM ones, I am more inclied towards the OEM ones???

5. Any good DIY's or website's with DIY's

Any input or feedback is welcome. or Sarcasm (which is free on this forum....lol)

Thankx
JFK

i would go to autozone or any other auto parts store to see if they have any cv joints with a lifetime warranty, and get those.
replace the one with the tear in it, just look under the car to see which one has a tear and needs to be replaced.

i replaced just 1. only replace whats broken. I went to autozone, got life time warranty. i think it was like $110 with $40 core. not too hard to replace.

i replaced it once and they gave me a defective one, they tried to tell me i installed it wrong. Finally got them to give me another one and it worked fine.

unlewser....did you replace it yourself...... I found a good deal from Pepboys for 59.99 with life time warrenty....with some $40 core...am planning to do it myself.....any pointers or things that I should look out for.....what is the tightening torque on the main axle nut......I have read that this one needs to be tighten to spec or else it will ruin the complete axle assembly......any idea....

I highly recommend replacing the whole axle and not just the cv joint (much easier and often cheaper). check both axle boots for cracks or tears, if any are observed replace the axle. You will need a 36mm socket to remove the axle nuts, and a ball joint remover. good luck

im pretty sure when you replace the cv joint, you're actually replacing the whole axle. i havent heard of any places that give you just the cv joint.

its a lot easier to replace the halfshaft, but they do also sell the cv joint seperately. you can find them on ebay or some auto parts stores for preatty cheap but its not worth it for all the extra labor.

I just replaced both driver and passenger half shafts on my parents Honda Accord. Bought both complete rebuilt half shafts for under 135 bux (NAPA). Just needed to return the core. So convenient! Long ago when I was wrenching, there wasn't such thing as "rebuilt" half shaft. Everything was "Ala Cart" Replacing the outer CV boots always turned out to be a very messy job......to say the least......

i replaced it myself. I didnt really tighten anything to spec, just tightened it tight. Then you smash the locknut so it wont go anywhere.

you need to rent a ball joint puller from the auto store. and a breaker bar helps. Either brake the 36mm nut while your car is on the ground, or you have to have someone on the brakes to keep it from spinning.

you can buy cv joint kits which allow you to take apart your cv joint, repack it with grease and put a new boot on it. I would not advise it, it is a pain and gets real messy.

I had this done about a month ago and it says "two CV axle shafts" for $266 and $189 of labour. It seems the mechanic doesn't like to do just the CV joints. Alberta shop rates are pushing $100 an hour..

It took something to physically tear the boot before it went.. probably the day I was stuck in snow so deep I had to get pulled out
