CL Spoilers and Body Kits - New

Hi Fellow Boardies,

I've been reading with keen interest about how little body stuff is available for CLs. I finally decided to place this post when I saw that there are body kits for Chevy Astro Vans and Focus wagons.

'Tis not fair. But I'd rather light a candle than curse the darkness.

For a seperate project, I have access to some very talented CAD designers, clay modelers, and mold makers. These folks are always looking for a way to make some extra coin.

Here is my idea: Using my 1997 CL as a platform, we model 4 or 5 different rear spoilers in 3D. If there is interest in these designs, we'll prototype a few of them in fiberglass. When we get a few clean copies, I'll hand them out to a couple people here free of charge for their feedback. If the feedback is positive, I'll calculate a fair price based on molding 250 of them over a few months and make them available. Based on my schedule, I could develop and product prototypes by July.

If this experiment is well recieved, I'd be willing to move onto body kits, etc.

I'm opening an automotive restoration shop this fall, and this is one of the services we hope to offer.

Lemme know what you think.

I'm thinking the spoiler would be the better starting place, because if this tanks, I'll have a smaller initial investmment;-)

As soon as I figure out how to post surveys, I'll start seeing what style of spoilers people like most.

One thing I'm going to try to avoid is the big Wing's West style basket handle. I'm partial to subtle spoilers that hug the trunklid, which would be more like a diffuser. But I'll try to mockup 4 unique kinds.

i would be interested in seeing one style that was flush with the trunk. And also one that is 3-4 inches above, i know this is a little generic but i hate attempting to wash under the stock spoiler, my hand just doesnt fit.

great!!! How about taking the stock spoiler look and cutting off the middle part that bolts to deck lid (trunk) and making the whole spoiler a size bigger. I believe it'll be clean but a hell if alot sportier. just an idea!!!

You can use me as a guinea pig for your experiment! Sounds like an excellent idea!

Heres why this wont work. Many of us already have the stock CL spoiler and arne't interested in changing over. Those of us who dont have one dont like em'. Thats been my experience from being ab member of this board for well over a year. I would show absolutly no interest in a spoiler. I would however show a GREAT DEAL of interest in that body kit. Point being is if ur testing the waters by testing with a spoiler, its gonna flop because there are probably 100% more people out there interested in the body kit and not the spoiler. Either way bro this is pretty kewl and i think i speak for everyone when i thank you for at least bringing this oppertunity to us. thats jsut my .02

Another reason I'm starting with a spoiler is that I'm going to do one for my car anyway, and if I have the molds, it would be a waste just to use them once.

Don't get the wrong, the body kit would follow, but as there are so many different variants of body kits, it would take much longer to nail down a look that the majority like.

I appreciate your thoughts on this, and when I start to delve into body kits (I'm actually doing some 3D modeling on a rear underbumper diffuser), I'll count on you guys for your guidance.
