Catalyst Below Threshold
Catalyst Below Threshold
CEL came on and threw me 67, Catalyst Below Threshold
I already searched and read what everyone had to say, but I'm wondering if anyone here right now has any input on it.
I've read it's either the 02 sensor or the cat itself?
How do I know which one?
I also saw this
which dustbuster posted (very grateful)
My car has 135xxx miles, so I assume I'm included in this, right?
Am I missing something?
Also, I have a CAI.. should I put my stock crap back in before I take it to Acura?
Thanks

If you have any of the o2 sensor codes (P0137,P0138,P0141), diagnose those first. Otherwise do the following, because you aren't going to like my answer.
Verify the problem:
1. Do the ECM/PCM Reset Procedure
2. Start the engine. Hold the engine at 3,000 rpm with no load (in park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on.
3. Connect the SCS service connector.
4. Test-drive 40-55 mph for approx. 2 minutes. Then decelerate for at least 3 seconds with the throttle completely closed. Then reduce the vechicle speed to 35 mph, and try to hold it until the readiness code comes on.
If you don't get the CEL, it was an intermittent failure, system is OK.
If you do get it, you can first try to replace the gaskets to the CAT. If you are still getting the code, check your Three way catalytic converter. Inspect the inside with a flashlight and check for plugging, melting and cracking. If you got any of those, replace it.

i just realized the closest acura dealership is 55 miles away..
i read that with a bad cat it can warp shit and basically destroy your engine..
do you think i can make that trip to get it replaced okay?
also, does recall stuff HAVE to be done at Acura?
or can i go to an "acura certified" or whatever kind of place?
what about a honda place?
where's wilp when you need him?

I never heard of a bad cat causing engine problems. It's mostly the other way around. Lots of times a CAT will fail when another part of the engine is failing and causing the CAT to work beyond normal operating conditions (such as a foul spark plug causing rich fuel mixture).
You normally should be ok, unless your CAT is clogged. Then you will probably notice significant performance loss or the engine stalling. Because you have a warranty, you have to play by their rules. It's best to contact the Acura dealership or acura certified shop to determine if they will honor the warranty if you drive it in.

I currently have the same CEL code on my car's ec u. I've doen a bit of research on htis code on the net,and tons of comments say to check for a small hole on the top of your cat, (or just a small hole on the cat somewhere), which throws off the air/fuel ratio reading at the back o2 sensor. I pulled my cat apart with the same code, and it looked brand new on hte inside. I did not check the entire outside for holes tho, and I think if i check again I'll find one. It's hard to say, tho, cause I have little pinholes in like 4-5 spots in the piping right before the cat starts.
Anyway, just letting you know that code is common with a hole in hte exteroir of the cat.
