Car Stereo Install

Guys-

I am installing a new Kenwood head unit in my 98 3.0 premium coupe, I have heard several things about the current bose system in their- like its wiring is different, I dunno. I also would like to see if anyone can help me with pictures or text on how to remove the old head unit, I have done previous installs on my old Accord, so I am not a complete dumbass. Please help me!!

I don't think that that an aftermarket head unit will work without bypassing the stock bose amplifier. At least in my 97' it didn't. I had to actually disconnect the wires to the amp and bypass the speaker wires.

Why can't I use the exisitng stock bose amplifier with my new aftermark deck, or are they specific to Bose systems?

It will work, I use the factory amp. Mine was the in dash CD, witht he amp in the right rear of the trunk. I just connected up like a normal install. Of course, the output of the aftermarket is hotter than the Bose, so you don't have to turn it up very much to get loud.

dosent sound as good when u dont bypass the amps. but its alot of work to do it. and if you eventually want to add amps to your interiors and subs your gonna have to bypass it anyways if u want to get the most out of your equiptment. to get your stock out(i have 97 but shoudl be same) u gotta take out the hazard light button, clock, and once u get that out u should be able to just pop out the wood trim around the cd player and just detatch anything that gets in your way. of course youl need a mounting kit to get the head unit in there but the hardest part is just bypassing the bose..

I tried to hook it up to the amp but it didn't work with the harness adapter. So i just bypassed the bose amp. The stock componets sound better without the bose. Some guys would say that the impedance of the bose speakers are 2ohm which will fry the deck. I'd had mine running for over a year and no problems. So whichever way you want to go.

So let me get some things straight, I found some install guides that will be good to help me out, but I need some recommendations on these amps, where are the stock ones, and is it better to bypass, I know how to do it, but I need to know quality, I also am installing my old 2 12" Infinity Subs and Amps, but that amp is only for my subs, will the stock amps be enough for my interior speakers? I want this to sound great

Idealy the best way to run the stock speakers with the best sound and controll would be to run an aftermarket amp to the stock speakers. Bypassing IMO is better because you dont have a high power goin into a line level signal which provides a cleaner sounding setup. The stock bose amp is located on the passenger side of the trunk rite in back of the tail light. Refer to this link thanks to dustbuster4 http://public.fotki.com/dustbuster4/stereoampwiring/

im about to do the same... my Pioneer DEH-850MP just came in today gotta go home and check it out (at work) but I am going to put in subs and amp for subs... the HU should be enough power for the stock interior speakers right? so I can just bipass the bose amp. im not even sure I have a bose amp I never really understood from all the talk about premium 3.0 2.3 97 98 99 bose non bose written on the cd player or not written bose on the cd player talk.

I guess I'll just look in the back to see if I got the amp or not haha.

I'm doing an install tomorrow as well - got the kit, the harness so I don't have to chop the factory harness off and I'm planning on running it straight through the bose amp. If the volume is that out of control or whatever I'll think about bypassing the bose amp, but I'm not going to do it if I don't have to.

my coworker told me that you really don't need the harness if you aren't going to take out your head unit really.. just cut the factory one off and crimp and electrical tape the wires up.

how much and where and what kind of harness do I need? I'll do a search later at home but if someones got the answer let me know thanks

The harness, available at BestBuy for about $15, looks like this:
http://www.scosche.com/scosche/connectors/HA02.asp
I got is so that I don't have to cut the factory harness off and lose it, etc, in case I want to go back to stock to sell the car.
I also got an install kit from BB for about the same $$$:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....oryId=cat08291
Looks like I might have to lose the factory tape deck with it but I never use tapes anyway...

thanks to ChrisBPickering for the links.

If you plan to keep the car cut the stock harness. If not buy an adapter. I just bought one because its the easiest way. I never used a dash kit because of the way the headunit sticks out of the dash just not clean IMO. I always flush-mounted my headunits to match the stock look. Good luck and enjoy your new headunits.

sorry, but if you want it to sound GREAT your gonna have to take out the bose completley... too trebbley and just not enough power.. go with a 4 channel amp and new interior speakers...your hu prolly will put out around 22 watts of power(RMS) an amp will put out alot more than that(for ex mine is 85 rms per channel(4 channel)) and it only cost me $200 good ol eclipse...the older models have more power for some reason...but if your really lookin for something that sounds "GREAT" as you said your gonna have to get amps and some new speakers.

I wanted to try to flush mount mine as well but wasn't sure how it would stay in there - I also have the factory tape deck in, which I would lose with the kit. Suggestions?

There is alot of customization when flush mounting an aftermarket head unit into the car. Ill post some pics of what mine looks like today.

Guys-

I am doing the install this weekend, is it better to replace speakers, or do the interior ones sound fine? I have some really nice pioneers, but I here bose speakers are really good, what to do?
