Capacitive Discharge Ignition

Chris(TEX)... I'm gonna need your help with this one. Check it out. The biggest electrical circuit in any car is the ignition system, right? Except when you add high output car audio components. Then that becomes the biggest. Amps draw tons of current from the battery which strains the electrical system. A 1 farad capacitor is an excellent cure for the headlight dimming blues. What about your ignition system? We're driving high output Honda's right? Your ignition sysytem needs the same attention. So I thought... Why not stick a half farad cap on the 12 gauge hot wire heading into the coil. That thing is rediculously big though and hard to wire to small wiring curcuits. So I wondered if anyone else had thought of this. Nology Power Core is what I found. It's a easy to install sealed inductor. And only $60 bucks. This thing makes total sense as far as performance. It works on our high ouput amps. Why not our high output coils? I wish Nology gave specs on the thing. Does anyone have any thoughts, questions or past experiences with this giant red tootsie roll? www.nology.com

I agree to an extent. Current drain by the ignition system can be improved, but I am unsure that a CAP (or the like) is the answer. CAP's are designed for high current output instantaneously. THis is perfect for current draw for amplifiers since music is dynamic and the variences in passages can instantly take the amp from a 5AMP draw to 60AMPs in milliseconds.

However, the cars ignition system is a more constant draw. Spikes in the current draw are not common. The increase in RPM's doesn't happen fast enough for the battery to keep up. BAttery have farad ratings too, in a way. They have a capacitance value, and the auto maker genrally chooses a battery that will provide enough current to more than sufficently power your ignition system, starter, and electrical system.

Now, as we all know, there is room for improvement. The biggest battery that will fit will always be good, and a large sealed gel cell is even better. Hell, if you have a big stero too (100+ amp max drain) a second gel cell. I am a firm proponent of batteries instead of CAPs, they generally work just fine to meet additonal current demand need, and at a fraction of the cost of a good CAP.

There are other things better suited to improved the ignition of your engine, including MSD ignition system which offer up beefed up coil packs, ignition pack, and wires. Upgrading your engine and frame grounds (2-4ga) and battery power wires all improve this. All of them won't provide much better HP, just better engine response.

That's jsut my thoughts on it.
