Bulb Question

I just purchased some clear corners off of Ebay, and am planning on getting amber bulbs. I noticed on several threads that 7440 is the turn signal bulb, but when I go to an auto parts store, it says that 3497 is the turn. The 3497 has a base like a 1156 or 1157 bulb, and the 7440 has a base like a large 168/194 wedge bulb. The bulbs and their bases are totally different. Just wondering because I tried a 1156/1157 bulb in the turn signal and it wouldn't fit, the bulb was just too large. Thanks.
