brake piston boot ripped off is this something to worry about?

quite a bit of the brake piston boot ripped off.. is this peice really important? it looked like the piston boot was glued on to the caliper or something.. how can i stick a new piston boot on? or will i realy even need it? theres still currently most of the caliper boot still on. so it would block most sand/dust out but not all.

A good rule of thumb is, you need everything (especially things that are not costmetic). Boots usually protects foreign objects from contaiminatnig the critical and expensive parts. Ask anyone here who has ever ripped a wheel bearing boot and did not replace it in time.

The glue is actually grease. So you need some of that, piston boot and piston seal. I am not sure which model/year you have but in the diagram below, the later two and some extra parts is part of #1 ($20 USD).

Part Numbers (at time of writing)
01463-SM4-A00....2.2/2.3
01463-SV4-000....3.0

Good Luck!

if the little rubber around the piston breaks, crap is gonna get in there and your caliper will seize. replace the caliper.

i dont feel like forking out 300 bucks for new rear calipers right now... but when they sieze from crap getting in, how much time do you think ill have befor that happens? a couple months? or will it sieze up about a 100miles?

for the picture or the piston boot part, number 1 you see the bags.. are those the grease that seals the piston boot to the caliper?? if it is maybe i should just pick up the piston boot kit and get it installed by a mechanic so he can also clean the piston cylinder too incase i got some junk in there..

i wouldn't chance your brakes. you could cause an accident, which is not only expensive but very dangerous. also, replacing something small as prevention is surely going to cost less than replacing the whole assembly when it all fails.

just did a quick search for legend calipers, and they are cheap at advance autoparts. Why not look into doing the conversion?

yeah same thing happened to my friends 240sx
his seal is broken and the pistin siezed we thought he just needed new brakes
so we took the wheel off and caliper to find that you couldnt bleed the brakes cause the piston siezed
you definitley dont want to chance it
he cant drive the car until he gets new calipers now

You can replace just one, they don't wear like pads or tires do. As for the legend swap, that's only for fronts, he needs rear
