to boost or not to boost...

been thinking alot lately if the H22 swap is worth it. well, i take that back, it would be worth it, but its alot of money, and i know i could go turbo for alot less, plus i've always had a thing for boosted cars. my question is, will the F block take the beating of boost with 143,000 on it? if so, how much can it take before it

stock f22s can take over 300 whp stock w/ a very very very good tune, but i highly doubt they are daily driven

depends on how big of turbo you went, you'd be much better off having the turbo kit though

not looking for nearly that much, i'd be happy with around 210-230ish. dunno about the turbo size yet tho, i havent looked into it nearly as much as H22s.

any suggested setups that have proven solid? because this is and will be a daily driver.

majority of the turbo kits on the market is just a basic turbo system to get started. meaning majority of the turbo components are there, but ideally, you'd still need to upgrade some shit if you want reliability. so, basically you can say the "kit" is convenient. which it is.. but many people think that's all they gotta do. that's fine for those who are lookin for the noise. but if you're seeking any performance gains, to start off with, you'll definitely need better fuel management rather than a vafc + fmu "tune"--which is like a band-aid to get you rollin in the mean time.

keep in mind prior to buying a turbo, make sure you know:

- how much power you're looking at, both in the long and short run.
- what kind of power band you're looking for.
- budget.
- spool time.
- etc.

You can do a turbo setup for less. But I'd rather not end up with a junkyard or a half ass turbo system. Also depends on where and how much you spend for parts.

The F22 stock block can handle boost better than an H22 stock block. For sure your F22 will take a beating under boost, but if you're looking towards the longevity of your motor, that depends on the overall condition of it. If you have money, keep an F22 on the side. They're common and pretty cheap if you know where to find them. On top of that, if you have money to play with, consider building up the spare F22. You can prolly do an easy 200+ on low boost. Technically, it's totally do-able and shouldn't be hard to achieve. Just make sure you have an efficient turbo system, and you maintain it well.

yeah i was thinking about when i went H22 (which was originally my plan) i would build up the F a little bit, but i think i'd like to stay with the car's original motor, for a couple reasons, mostly because the F is a little more torquey, and i'd like to see what i can get out of the little SOHC.

you can make a lot of power, at a price. it's all a mater of personal preference. i'd say go for it, because you can still make great #'s on the F (built or not).

well, open it up and replace what you think may need replacing... if you're gonna go through with turbo'ing the F, might as well make sure everything's in order on the engine before you drop a couple grand...

might be able to get some better performance parts in there too

Yup, you get teh best of both worlds if you go for the rebuild. So many opportunities will arise.

Then again, you can say that you can have the best of both worlds while boosting on a stock block. But I wouldn't take such a risk with my investment. That's just my opinion.

how about in the 22? If they fit in the 23 they could possibly fit the 22?

i agree. Im getting a completely different motor for my new setup to be built up to make sure its reliable . Boosting the F is a good idea, as it already has iron sleeves and can take some punishment, but just to be sure id say to tear it down and rebuild it. you dont want it blowing on you and you be without your precious CL
