Automatic Transmission Problems

I have a 1998 3.0 CL with 74,000 miles. The automatic transmission recently failed and now requires a major overhaul including replacement of the torque converter and 2-4 Drum. All clutches were very worn with some down to metal to metal.

I am the original owner and have changed the transmission fluid with the Honda ATF every 30,000 miles or so. Although I drive the car somewhat aggressively, I would be surprised that this would be the cause of this premature failure. By aggressively I mean that I enjoy the satisfying feel of giving it sufficient throttle so it will downshift when I want to accelerate. This is the first automatic I have had since 1974 and I just miss the feel and performance of a manual transmission.

I am interested in finding out if others have had problems with their automatics. I know there is a problem with type S transmissions but I do not believe these problems apply to First generation vehicles. If I can find evidence that this is not an isolated failure I want to approach Acura for compensation for at least part of this $1400.00 repair.

Well, i have a 99 3.0. And my tranny went out on me at 47,000 miles. I got lucky and my tranny was still under warrenty. So it was all paid for. The guy that helped me said they're having programs with the 3.0 trannies too. But it isn't as bad as the Type S tranny. You might just want to go to the dealer and ask them about it.
