Annoying screech
Only on/right after startup...annoying screech...then goes away after a little while. doesn't seem to be performance related -- car's runnin sweet, just sounds like fingernails on a blackboard for 10 or 15 secs.

Start with the belts, make sure they all have the correct tension. If they do, take a little bar of ivory soap and carefully hold it against the inside of each belt while the engine is running. This will cause it to grip a bit better. The next thing to check is that the tensioner pulleys are not binding... If the barings are failing, they will squeel. But this sounds like an impropperly tensioned belt which can cause screeching.

I can see two belts, one fat and one skinny [drivers side]: Checking the tension, both seem pretty tight; the skinny seems a little tighter than the fat one, and the soap seemed to help a little (or else starting up/down 3-4 times between soaps killed down the screech for a moment).
Anyone tell me exactly what these belts are so I know what I'm messing with; accessory belts???
Sorry 4 being such a noob,
Thanks

yea man they are accessory belts.. when they get old they get dry and screech. try wd40.., start the car and spray it on the belt where the grooves are. that should keep it quiet till you can replace them.. oh yea belts are generally bout 10$ a piece but if you take it somewhere they will charge you between 75$ and 150$ to do it.

Did you add any fluid to you car today? If so, did you spell any? I had the same thing happen to me today, I was adding some of Hondas coolant and I spilled some and I heard that screeching noise. It scared me for a second , I was "man....I hope I put that in the right container" .
It was just that some of it got on a belt and was causing it to slip a tiny bit.

thanks, wil and sonny,
no fluid, though: originally, I was thinking maybe the little paintshop I have going on on my hood with the sanding might have blown some dust in there.

There should be three. On the 2.2, the power steering, then the alternator and a/c. power steering and alternator will be skinny and the a/c a bit wider. If you only see two, the other is more toward the bottom. As for the timing belt, it is shrouded and not accessable unless you do some disassembly. And as for slippage, if it were the timing belt, your engine would have been fucked. that belt will NEVER screech. It is a greared belt designed to mate the cam gears and the crank shaft.
