ABS Light On - Control Module?

The ABS light is on on my wife's 97 3.0 CL and won't go out. Mechanic has checked sensors and says they are OK and that the module's diagnostics are not responding. He says Acura wants $995 for a new module and he can get me a used module for $350. www.autoecu.com tells me that they will rebuild mine for $395. Does anyone have any experience with this or any suggestions. It would seem that a rebuilt module with a 3-year warranty is a better deal than a used one. If I go that route, can you tell me how to identify and remove the module. I assume that the car will run without it as the mechanic tells me that the ABS is not working now. I'd like to get this taken care of before tha snows fly in Rochester, NY, particularly since my wife will hound me forever if she has an accident because her ABS is not working.

Thanks in advance - Joel

I'm having the same problem, as far as the rebuilt one, do you have to send yours in to get rebuilt? The abs module on the 3.0 is on the left side by the fuse box, it has 3 metal chamer lookin things on it. I believe it says ABS on it too, it's in the front left part of the engine bay. I'll see if I can find a pic of my engine bay.

Here's where it is. If you're removing it, also remove your ABS main fuse, it's in the ABS fuse box right up from the module. Also, I don't know if you can remove the ABS module and have the brakes still work. Check with your mechanic on that one

Thanks BlackAck. If I go the rebuild route, I will have to remove the module. They rebuild it and send it back.

Right on, I looked on their site, did you do the request form? Cuz I didn't see anything for an ABS module for our car.

I had the same problem too. My ABS light wouldn't go off and when my mechanic hooked up his computer to it, it said that my ABS module / modulator was bad. So I was lucky enough to find one on ebay and got it for $50. + shipping. You will still have brakes but not ABS. Honestly, I live in the twin tiers on NY/PA not far from you and ABS won't help you anyway if you are sliding on snow or ice so it's kind of a moot point. But we have to keep the girls happy right?

Location of the ABS modulator is (standing on front of the car looking down into the engine compartment) on the left side of the motor, on the fender, towards the front. You can't miss it. Look for the rigid brake lines going to the top of it.

Like I said, right now your ECU is probably displaying a code stating that the modulator is bad and that has to be cleared off before it will read anything else. Meaning, once I had my modulator replaced, the error code went away only to be replace with a code stating that my left rear sensor was bad too!!! Uugh!! if only I knew that, I would of been looking for a sensor too and had them done at the same time.

BlackAck - I called the folks at www.autoecu.com at 1-800-257-3395.

When I spoke with my mechanic, I had the impression that I was looking for an electronic control module which I could just unplug and replace. The module your picture points to includes the pump, brake lines and reservoir which would be beyond my level of incompetence.

Can anyone tell me where the electronic module is located.

Thanks - Joel

It should be right above that, by the fuses. So, they can't rebuild the WHOLE module?

OK,..I have the service manual on CD and it's all PDF file but for the life of me I could not figure out how to save off the pics so I did the next best thing...I took a pic of it and post it. Hopefully it'll help. I you need further assistance, pm (personal message) me

I have a 99 3.0 Cl and on the passenger side under the dash and behind the side kick panel, the ABS module is located. I know this cause my mechanic pointed it out to me this past Friday when he was fixing my brakes.

Later Joel and Good Luck on your quest

Joel, I also found this flow chart that should help you to determine what the heck is going on.

I been having the smae problem on my 2.2. Sometime my light goes off but most of the time it is off. Last time I had it in at Acura they said that the computer said everything was fine. I'll have to check all the fuses (even though I don't think it is one) and I'll have to check that ground wire thing.
