Saab had always built quirky cars that are a bit pricey, I'm not surprised they offered a 5 cylinder and few others. Volvos seem to go for a premium as well and are more reliable than American cars but less reliable than the Japanese. Their C30 which is a hatchback with a rear end that resembles the AMC Pacer sure enough, offers two 5 cylinder engines to choose from.
BMW believes the straight six is the most inherently balanced engine. I think GM came up with a five cylinder for their trucks and SUV's; I had forgotten about it.

I know that because of the design the 5 cylinder could never run as smooth as engines with an even number of cylinders, (I-4, v-6). It seems as though it just didn't really catch on since they could get more power and about the same fuel economy out of a v-6. I know that some European manufacturers used, and may still use a 5 cylinder engine, like Saab and I think Volvo did too.
