Is the 1st gen CL the bastard stepchild of Acura

I like my car and all i just bought it as a daily driver ( i have a corvette convertable for any nice days that i use more often than not). I bought it last year (14 months ago) it's a 99 2.3 it was in mint condition with 40K miles for 13,500 certfied from a local Acura dealer. The more i drive the car the more it just seems like a 2 door 94-97 accord. Seems like all the other acura cars are a little more distinguished (save the SLX). I dont know i am just wishing i never bought it. I wouldn't get much for it if i sold it so i know i am gonna keep it for a while. I guess i am just searching for some good news on this car. It's slow, the acura paint quality is horrible (fiancee has an integra, same issues). And it really is very bland. I know, why did i buy it you'd ask. It was an impulse buy but i want to like the car i really do. When i wax it and its super clean i take a liking to it but just wondering what you all thought. I mean we all own these cars gimme some good reasons why someone would want one?

If your comparing it to a corvette...hmm...it gets around better in the winter. Thats about it. Its a nice car , but not as nice as corvette class cars.

man, stop complaining....ive got a 97...and first off, people dont even know what kind of car it is...atleast its not as popular as an accord, secondly.....people think its new and when i tell them its a 97 theyre blown away...so dont rub on the styling...i personally love my car (excluding its not rwd with 300hp)

I think its an affordable daily driver. You didn't mention if yours is auto or manual, which I think makes a difference. If I had an stock auto 1st gen, I'd feel bored off my ass. Then again, that's why most of us are here - we want to mod our car, express ourselves through our cars. Haven't you seen those new Autozone commercials? Anyway, start modding the car, and watch as it slowly (literally) turns into something you enjoy having. The styling isn't timeless, but its definitely not outdated. IMO, its a great car to drive to work, under the radar, but with a decent amount of features/amenities.

Haha, us 1st gens are defensive

Yep the 1st gen is nothing more then a glorified accord coupe, but we get a front strut brace I used to hate the look of the CL same as Beetroot. But now I own one and i think its a very attractive car, specially when its black and clean. It has a distinguished design that has aged well. And while i see 50 a day in LA i know they are not a very common most other places (every car is common in LA)

And as stated before, most people dont know that the CL is an accord. Hell most people dont know what a CL is period! and yes people always ask if its a new car which is always nice. my only complaint is better side bolstering (better for my back) and MORE HP. the HP wouldnt have been an issue if the had made the V6 in mt, took forever to bring that back...

Anyway, enjoy your car, or just drive the vette more

PS: also as stated before with the 2.x it really does matter if you have a MT or AT, I personally wouldnt touch the 2.x with an AT with a 10 foot pole it would suck (no offense to 2.x AT drivers) but i wouldnt touch an AT period with any car

a little sensitive about this huh?

why do you care what I think about your car. you obviously like it or you wouldn't have bought it, or be on this website. thats all that matters.

Nah its cool - everyone is entitled to their own opinion...You expressed yours in a way that would obviously make 1st gen'ers defensive and pissy. But hell - its a slow Friday at work, I don't mind one bit

But actually, the real bastard stepchild of Acura is the RSX!!!

I would agree with you before i cleaned my trunk up. Now that its shaved the spoiler would take away the "clean" back end and throw it off. Im glad mine does not have one

i dont know how people can say the body style is bland and out dated. Every time someone asks me about the car they are shocked to find out that its a 97, they always thing its a 2000 at the oldest.

asshat...

funny you reference them to a Honda Accord, because basically that is what the CL is comparable to. I like my CL and i agree w/ the majority of the people about the classic styling of the car. I love the sloping ass and the way it looks from the front, very aggressive....especially when slammed.

The paint quality does suck, it looks good from far away...but up close i see shit i'd like to change. I'm sorry you dont like your CL...maybe it isnt the car for you, but i love mine!!!
I have a 99 2.3 and i have no complaints, but then again i'm not comparing it to a Corvette....shiiiiit, if my weekend car was a Escalade on 22's..then i had to drive around a Geo Tracker on the weekends i'd be bitchin too!!!

...and the new TL is based on the new Accord platform and the new TSX is based on the European Accord and Infinit's are "just" Nissans and Lexus's are "just" Toyotas and then there's the American cars, a Sunfire is a Cavalier and a GMC truck is the same as a Chevrolet and the Cadillac Escalade is a Tahoe and Mercury's are Fords, hell the Lincoln Navigator is an Expedition, even the Jaguar is based on the Lincoln LS, Saabs are based on GM's and so on and so on..... So what's your point anyway?
Don't like your car? SELL IT!

i'm not really complaining about my car. Just kinda find itboring and too much like a accord with not much character. Actually i took the time the other day to detail it for 3 hours like i would my vette. Mine is nighthawk black with tint and to tell you the truth it looks pretty nice when it is spotless. I had it in showroom condition. Made me feel better. I still think i should have taken the cash i spent on it and just got something nicer with higher miles but well maintained. There is a nice E class mercedes at the dealer down the road for 14,400. Thats what i paid for my cl a year and a half ago. Of course the mercedes has twice the miles on it and costs a fortune anytime something happens. After thinking this over their are worse plots in life than having a Corvette Convertable for fun and a 1st gen CL as a daily driver. I feel like an ass for whining. It's still a bland car though

I dont think so! RSX's are ok, but i wouldn't take that foot long sub of a VIGOR over an RSX. The Vigor had a long look to it, didn't like it at all.

Vigor's don't look much different from the TL that replaced it. An RSX is for a HS or college kid. No self respecting adult would own one.

The vigor looked like a bigger integra sedan or a smaller TL. And that 5-cyl engine....good luck finding parts and mod parts for it. Where's the 5-cyl Honda/Acura engine now? That truly is a Redheaded Bastard Child of Acura.

That 5 cylinder was put into the TL that relaced the vigor being the 2.5TL. Ever driven it. I actually like the response the 2.5 gave. It is much better than the 2.3 i have in my CL. I bought the 2.3 because i have no confidence in the engine tranny match that the 3.0 and then 3.2 2nd gen have. Far too many failures. If i want to go fast i'll take the vette out. The 2.3 has enough power for just running errands and day to day driving. Anyone that bought a 1st gen CL for performance is a little off their rocker in my mind anyway. Just to get into the 13's and 12's is a real hassle.
