*AUTOS* What gear do you drive in?

Just curious for the past 7 months I've been driving in d3 all the time. I think I'm going to go back to driving in d4. I thought this would be easier on the tranny instead of the constant d3-d4 shifting back and forth. Someone said only drive in that if your going under 35, but I do 45-50 everyday in d3 for months

Am I causing extra damage to the engine by driving at 2500-3000 rpm everyday? Or did I cause damage?

The reason I want to switch back is because it gets annoying sometimes when I wanna speed up and I dont really wanna go past 50-55, but it helps not get any speeding tickets cause I stay locked at 45-50mph.

Does d4 reall have any significant damage on the tranny, or just fugggg it and drive in d4 all the time? I'm getting to the point where I dont even care about the tranny ne more i've been babying it forever and it still feels like shit.

You could drive up to 80 mph in D3, just that it will be close to redline....i throw it down to D3 when i drive if i need to do a quick lane change. works great..LoL

People like you make me wonder

I'm sitting here at 75k on my second tranny, and it still feels iffy. I do everything for percaution and still have problems. I got tranny cooler, honda atf fluid changes frequently, and drive like an old lady.

What's your driving style like? How about maintenance? You my friend are an idol on this site.

i drive in d4 all the time except for highway driving. i find that if i try to drive in d5 around town the car shifts really weird and seems as if it is constantly trying to get to 5th no matter the rpms so it feels really sluggish. d4 gives me the smoothest shifts and best throttle response. i am still on my first tranny @ 60,xxx, does the tranny cooler help tranny life alot? i am looking into purchasing this very soon.

I drive in D4 all the time. The only time I drive in D3 is when I'm at 25-40 mph and some chump wants to run it...that's when I drop it and gun it.

my driving style? .. its not very aggresive.. i only push the gas starting from 2nd gear.. so.. if im at a light.. and i take off.. i dont gun it from the beginning.. i wait till the automatic switches to second and then i push down on the gas... im not really a racer.. more of a poser.. haha

as for maintenance.. ive been running the same honda ATF fluid for about 90K now..

i figure.. seattle is easier on the trannies cause the weather is cooler here.. we dont have as much heat... thus our cars run better and smoother

Well of course. Cause i'm down shifting back to third gear. The car will pull hard and the rpm will jump. I like throwing it into D3 on the freeway sometimes, when i feel like driving fast. haha Pull it to redline then putting it back into d4.

wrong. 2nd gear u can pull up to 80 and be redlined, 3rd gear u can pull all the way up to 110.

as for me i drive in both, if i feel sprtysand need the extra pull i'll drop it in D3, and yea i have had it in D3 doing 90+ on the highway, but i don't recommend holding it there for long. i will drop in D3 if someone wants to run and if i'm in moderate traffic, but i ususllay shift to D4 if i'm going past 50 or so.

Think about how often it really down shifts when you speed up. It seems like alot but it's really not unless your a speed racer. But also think about all of the other gears it goes through as well. I don't think your hurting anything but your mpg. and the excessive where of your tranny being in a lower gear and higher rpms all the time. You could be running your tranny into the ground faster than you really want. I used to do it my old Sdime all the time till I blew the main bairing.

I thought I was putting less wear on the tranny by having it in d3 because it didnt shift back and forth.

d4 almost all the time.. at 65k.. hope i last a heck of a lot longer than that... d3 is good for me in stop and go traffic or times i hit a lot of stop signs. it skips a lot going down from 4th when i brake then back to 1st it will lag big time only if i do a rolling stop.. so d3 is good for those times.

What the fugggg!! I put it into d4 today, and everytime it shifted from d3 to d4 it was a quick sudden jerk, felt real weird.

Anyone know whats up? Could something have affected it from not driving in d4 for a while?

I always drive in d4 because most of my driving is on the highway and gas would kill me if I tried to run d3. Only use d3 when I need some extra speed quickly to make a pass or change lanes.

btw 113,000+ and still on first tranny (as far as I know)

Usually D4.

On occasion I feel sporty and gate shift.

I'll drop from D4 to D3 for passing when necessary.

If I need to turn a corner quickly I'll down shift rather than use the breaks.

When driving in the mountains, I'll use D3 and even D2 on steep grades like Pike's Peak. If you use the brakes to do what the transmission can do, you won't be stoppin' at the bottom. They will stop you at the mid-point to check brake temps. 320+ gets you a 30 minute pit stop. As for driving style, it varies with condition, but I have only put it to the floor a couple of times... Other wise, I just ease in... and in most cases I will feather the throttle off so as not to engage the v-tec to save gas.

Where are you going to upshift from D4, to Neutral.
You can downshift from D4 to D3, which I've done.
Now, I've heard of people starting off on 1, upshifting to 2,
then D3 and D4, but that's just crazy. I think those are the members
who are on their 2nd or 3rd tranny.

Who said anything about upshiftin from d4 to neutral? That word's not even in my post. Of course I meant d3-d4....and occasionally 1-2-3-4 but like you said...those people are on their 2nd or 3rd trannies.

im usually in d4 until some asshole civic ricer wants to fuck with the wrong "accord". then ill switch it down to d3 get going at about 25-30, then prescious will go deep into 2nd and ill scream past ang get to 60 or so and slow down and give them a chance to do a ricer flyby. but to answer your question d4.

1,2,3,4 is a waste of energy in an auto. If I'm looking to launch, I'll start in D3, let the car go from first to 2nd then I will drop in to D2 to get the rpm range I want, then D3 and subsequently D4. I don't "gate shift" very often, but it is fun sometimes. as for multiple transmissions, regular maintenance will keep your transmission in good shape. And additionally, starting in D1 and upshifting will not hurt the transmission unless you are running above 5500 rpms in 1st... then you are just asking to burn up the clutch packs.
